Impending Loss I have to say goodbye to her today

I feel absolutely broken. She’s only 3 years old and has been with me for about 2 of those. Up until four days ago she was absolutely fine. We played, cuddled, had treats, not a cloud in the sky. Then she suddenly got sick and started deteriorating fast. The vets and myself thought she had a nasty stomach bug or ate something bad, and after some anti nausea medication she seemed to perk up a little so I never expected this to happen. In only two days time she went from the active happy kitty I knew to barely being able to walk. Yesterday we got the news that her kidneys were basically all but gone. Probably a genetic issue we never knew was there, and even if we did there was nothing that could’ve been done.

I took her home from the vet last night not knowing what the right thing to do was, but all through the night she clearly got more and more uncomfortable and is now barely responding. As soon as the vet office opens I’m calling them to come in and put her to sleep.

I feel completely lost. I turned my apartment into a small kitty paradise where we were supposed to be together for at least 15 more years, and now she’ll be gone after just 2. She’s the reason I wake up in the morning and what I look forward to coming home to every day. I barely went on vacations because I would miss her so much. And now she’ll be gone and I don’t know what to do.

Thank you if you’ve read this far. I know it will get better with time but at the moment all I’ve been able to do is cry about all the years with her I’m going to be missing out on.

Sadness I don’t think I miss Cookie any less. It just feels different now.

After Cookie died, for a while every time I thought about him, I just thought about him being gone.

I’d look at his photos and cry. Even the happy ones made me sad because I just kept thinking, I wish he was still here with me and my family.

Later, when I started making that little world for Cookie, I had to go through his photos again and again.

I think part of me thought it might make me feel a little better. It didn’t really. I still cried a lot while making it.

But after looking through so many photos, I started remembering other things too.

I’d see his face and remember how much he loved being held. I’d remember how quickly he learned things, or something small we did together that I hadn’t thought about in a long time.

After I shared Cookie’s story, some people started telling me about their pets too.

A friend told me about cute sound her pet used to make. Someone else told me about a chair where he and his dog always used to sit together.

I really liked hearing these stories.

Everyone remembers such different things. Sometimes it’s something really small.

Sadness I don’t know how I’ll ever feel ok again

My cat crossed the rainbow bridge in August this year, shortly after my husband and I got married. A month after she passed we had our first baby. The emotional whiplash of this series of events has been brutal. Sandwiched between two things that should be some of the most joyful things we will ever experience has been the most painful day of my life. The sadness and pain of losing our cat has eclipsed everything and I cry every single day. The pain is immense. She was only 7 and died of heart failure after we’d very closely monitored her HCM since diagnosis with yearly ultrasounds and ECGs. She had specialist investigations when the CHF was noticed and a procedure to drain the pericardial effusion. She had furesemide and medicine to prevent clots but didn’t respond to the diuretics but it was all palliative but I am grateful it allowed us the knowledge and time to ensure her last two weeks weren’t spent suffering. We brought her home from hospital so she could spend all the time she had left being loved in the place she loved. We spent so much time in the garden with her, it’s her favourite place. When her breathing became too laboured as the fluid on her lungs grew, we made the decision to say goodbye to save her from the suffering of feeling like she was drowning from the fluid. I am just so sad and so heartbroken every day. Life feels so lonely without her. The house and garden feel empty without her. Even with our sweet and very wanted newborn, I just hold him and cry because my heart is so broken.

Sadness I lost my pet bird

Just a few hours ago I lost one of my pet birds, a cockatiel. I'm not quite sure how exactly she died but I found her hanging off the side of the dryer in the laundry room. I can't stop thinking if maybe I found her sooner I could've saved her or if I did something different maybe she would still be here. I heard nothing, no chips or screams. I feel angry, sad, so much grief. Her little body was slightly warm but then it was cold to the touch. I've burried her in a clay pot with her favorite snack and will probably get a plant to put on top of the soil. know that some might think that since she wasn't a dog or cat that I shouldn't care so much but it hurts. She was only 3 years old. She was supposed to be with me for so much longer. I don't have many pictures or videos of her since I'd always put it off to do it later, I regret it so so much. I don't really believe in any afterlife but I hope somehow l'll be able to see you again. I'll do my best to take care of Mac. I miss you so much Blondie, Im sorry.

Advice Wanted I miss my friend.

I miss Cuco. He was with me for 16 years, I'm 18.

I've had quite a complex family story and I ended up sharing more time beneath the same roof with him more than I've done with my mom, or dad, or siblings.

He passed on August 20th, and I'm not even close to fathom his lost. It's like it didn't occur. I feel that I just don't happen to be in the same room as him, but of course he is still here. Why wouldn't he still be here? He was, why would he leave? Liver Failure. He didn't want to leave, he really really tried to get on his feet when he was on the clinic table. Liver failure. He struggled to leave. Small dog, needed big dog dosis. Liver Failure. He never closed his eyes.

I'm really reluctant to even think about it. I don't feel like watching old photos. I don't want to cry. I'm told I can't cry because of a Dog. I lost my brother, why wouldn't I feel?

So my tears can't be seen, I feel shame.

It's officially 27th October in Mexico, where i'm from, and It's for me to celebrate Dia de Muertos. Of course I wanted to build and altar for him.

For the first time in two months I'm forced to think about him as how he is, dead.

He was loved, I gave him all the love needed and much much more. He lived a long, happy life. He was with me. I was with him.

I want to let him go. I want to be grateful, he gave me so much. I want to think about him and meet a smile in my face. I can't.

I feel like some kind of traitor when I refuse to see our pictures. I feel shame. I feel guilt. I feel alone.

I miss my friend.

Sadness I lost my soul cat yesterday

I don't know how I'm going to survive this, I didn't expect him to go so soon. I was scared if losing him for years already, just as I am scared to lose my mum. I just thought I still had a couple of years with him...

It came all very sudden and I couldn't say goodbye to him and I regret that I didn't choose differently, so I could have been there when he died..

It's still all so weird and it's the worst thing that has happened to me so far in my life and I've been through a lot, but this just hits differently.

I am so thankful for my best friend, because she took care of some thing that I couldn't and made sure I could say goodbye in an appropriate way and keep his ashes. We are going together today to pick him up and say goodbye and it just does not feel real...I was doing so well before this happened and now it feels like I won't be able to function at all anymore..

I will miss my little void so much, he has been with me for about a third of my life, he was only 11 and he didn't deserve this...I am so heartbroken...and it doesn't help that people are saying that he's better now that he isn't in pain anymore...ofc I don't want him to be in pain but I would have liked to be there for him when he left..I didn't see him since saturday night, when I brought him to the vet clinic because he turned yellow...I wish I hugged him more and gave him more kisses...my last memory of him is being carried away in the transport cage when he got admitted to stay at the clinic...he was so scared the whole time we were there...I just don't know how to deal with all of this...

Impending Loss Losing my Best Bud on Wednesday

Charles is my 16 year old dog, and on Wednesday, we're taking him to the park and having him euthanized. He has been my constant companion, full of energy and love. His favorite things were tennis balls and face kisses.

We told ourselves that we would keep fighting for him as long as he was having more good days than bad, and that time has passed. We hope we can give him one last very good day, with his favorite foods, people and activities.

He will be missed more than he could ever know. Charles, you were the best of dogs, and I will never be the same without you. I hope you get to play with Lola again: https://www.reddit.com/r/Petloss/comments/nh7tfi/goodbye_lola/

Sadness Complicated loss

I lost my sweet Frankie cat 10 days ago. In late summer he developed a mass on his nose. The needle aspiration showed no cancer, only "inflammation" (now I realize those are often false negatives and unreliable). I got my hopes up. It kept growing. I took him in for an X-ray and they said it's a mass but not sure what kind of mass. I said ok, I'll just keep watching out for his quality of life. His quality of life never deteriorated but the mass continued to grow. He had a voracious appetite, purred, followed me around. He was only 12 so I didn't want to give up on him. I got a fungal panel done, it was negative as well. The mass started ulcerating in early September. I took him in again, the vet tried to "drain" the "abscess" (mass), and I could hear his cries of pain from the waiting room. I told myself I'd never take him in again for this and I should just let him live out his days with this growing, ulcerating mass. Earlier this month I scheduled an in-home euthanasia appointment, but I cancelled it the day of, because I felt like I'd be giving up on him, and I wanted to know what he had exactly and if it could be cut out of him and maybe he'd go onto live a few more years. I took him into the vet once more for a biopsy. They did sedation ("Kitty Magic") and when they reversed it his heart stopped.

Although I knew his time was near, I feel so much guilt. He wanted to eat breakfast so badly that morning, and I didn't let him because of the procedure. Instead I drove him 40 mins to a vet where he died without me. I didn't even say goodbye because I assumed I'd be picking him up. I didn't enjoy that 40 min drive with him because I was rushing to be on time. He was so trusting. He laid on my lap the whole time. Just a couple meows during the ride and a few more when I dropped him off. Someone in the waiting room even said how cute it was that he was calling after me. Now it haunts me.

I wish I never tried for answers and just kept the home euthanasia. In a way I do feel relief like I can exhale finally after this long ambiguous battle with the mass, but this isn't how I wanted Frankie's life to end. He was always there for me and I wish I was there with him.

Sadness CW: Pet Loss I euthanised my cat and I feel so much guilty

I had first noticed Friday night my cat was licking his private area but noticed he was pooping but I didn’t recognise he wasn’t peeing. I booked my regular vet on Saturday but they were weren’t available so Sunday night I was googling paranoid and decided to call the closest Vet Monday morning to come in asap. I got to take him home the second day but took him back the next morning because he was blocked again and they kept him longer the second time. So from Monday to Friday he had been catheterised two times the second time being longer and had been blocked a total of three times in one week. After removing his second catheter Friday I was given three options initially 1. take him to the nearest emergency hospital (it was 4pm and the vet wasn’t 24/7 or equipped for the perineal surgery) 2. take him home and monitor for 24 hours hoping he passes pee 3. consider euthanasia. From the start of the week I had $3.5k in savings and received a pay check on Wednesday and I had spent about $3.8k for the regular vet stay. I asked the vet to call the cheapest emergency vet for a quote and I wanted to driver straight there instead of going home bc it was stressful for me to monitor him since last time he got blocked I wasn’t hopeful. I got a quote of $3.5k for the surgery alone but after the vet spoke to the hospital about my cats condition he recommended to my vet that I go home to monitor first.

So I did that. I asked the vet when I should wait til and she said around 10am-12pm the next day. From 9-11pm my cat hadnt passed any pee and I was calling a dozen hospitals and the cheapest one that quoted me the cheapest $3.5k was closed for emergency intake until 8am. I was so frustrated because I could have gone there earlier in the day despite not having the funds it was the best chance I could give him and I could’ve gotten a Vetpay loan and paid off in less than 6 months. Panic calling a lot of vets not because he was straining but because he hadn’t tried to pee I was told by multiple hospitals (a handful not able to intake for the night) to immediately take him to the vet some not being able to give quotes one gave 8-12k quote. After seeing my cat strain to pee at 11:30pm I took him to the closest vet scared he was in pain. I got quoted $5k for the surgery but first he would need to be catheterised again and kept for a couple days adding $3k roughly. I was told the surgery was common and many cases are successful but also prone to uti’s more blockages and I would need to manage his diet and stress (likely the cause of his blockage due to another cat at home).

For years he had been peeing outside the litter box and I’ve invested so much to try help Feliway, separated rooms, three litter boxes, asking my family to hang up everything and not leave anything on the floor.

After consulting with the hospital vet. I decided to euthanise. My male cat was only 3 yrs 9months. and I stayed and cried with him for hours until early morning. After that, I was stuck in my room for two days face swollen pimples everywhere. On the third day I stayed at the beach until night. The only thing I could think of was that I felt guilty because it felt like I was taking the easy way when I could’ve tried the surgery. But I feel like I also did try. I tried not to worry about the money, I found a cat boarding while I needed to go international for two weeks (right now), I spent $150 on medicated food the morning of the Friday. I thought he was going to come back home safe. It all happened to quickly over one week. I used up my savings, I had an exam, I was free from work through the week because I booked it off to study.

I cry at night and I think of telling someone I miss my cat and all I want to do is to see and cuddle him. I still have my male 4yr old cat I love but there’s a void. My 3yr old cat used to purr so loud and all the time and his face was so round and soft to kiss. I can’t help but think I didn’t try hard enough and I miss my cat.
I’ve now started my healthy cat on a medicated weight diet and I again feel guilty for giving him a better diet now that my other cat has passed. And it feels foreign to me to say that I only have one cat. Because they used to fight and cuddle but my healthy cat seems okay alone.

And of course it was another $400 bill for the emergency consultation and $600 for cremation and urn but I felt I had to have it to remember by.

I’m frustrated at the vet for telling me to wait til the next morning. I’m frustrated I didn’t have pet insurance I had a vet consultation discount subscription. I’m guilty for not having enough money and for not fixing the root cause.

Advice Wanted Getting another dog soon after losing your soul dog?

I lost my 16 year old chihuahua on Thursday. I had her since she was 9 weeks old. She was the first dog I ever had and the first pet that has died. I have not been able to stop crying since. I have tried taking my mind off things and doing things that I love to do (like watching horror movies and working jigsaw puzzles), but I still do nothing but cry. Her 17th birthday is November 10th and I’m dreading that day as well as the holidays coming up (she loved Thanksgiving and Christmas because she got to pig out).

I used to live with my mom but she has been in a nursing home since April after she had a stroke. My dog was the only thing keeping me sane and moving. Now she’s gone and I’m all alone in an empty house and my mental health has never been worse. I’m disabled and suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and major depressive disorder. My panic attacks were getting better and I was able to find coping mechanisms to where I haven’t had one in several years. Since Thursday, I’ve had them every day, multiple times a day.

The worst is at nighttime. Every night for 16 years, I would fix my dinner and give my dog her favorite wet food. She used to howl every night because she was so impatient. Now I eat alone. I still can’t stop telling her goodnight and that I love her. I probably never will.

I have been thinking about getting another dog. I feel absolutely horrible because it hasn’t even been a week but I am lost without my baby. Has anyone here ever got a dog soon after your soul dog passed? If so, how did it go?

Sadness Suddenly lost my soul dog last night

Lost my angel doggy last night suddenly. He was acting weird last weekend but started being normal. Then Saturday night it sounded like he was having a little bit of trouble breathing. He wouldn’t eat his regular food but ate chicken and rice. We took him to the vet yesterday morning and he sounded completely normal and we went home. Then last night he got worse and we took him back to the emergency vet. They said he either had cancer or heart failure and was struggling to stay alive. We ended up putting him down.

He was my best friend. He was with me through my 20’s, through grad school, moving, getting married, and having a baby. He was only 8 and the suddenness of this is really rocking me. I have cried all day. I keep looking for him in his usual spots. I keep thinking i’m hearing him drinking water or his nails clicking on the hardwood floors. I am absolutely destroyed. I miss him so much and wish I had known it was his last day.

Sadness I lost my 16 year old boy today

He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in March 2021. He helped me get through the death of my dad that October The vet gave him until December of that same year, but not only did he outlive that date but he was genuinely thriving. For 4 and a half years I spent every day and night stressing, worrying and researching. Watching his chest rise and fall as he slept to make sure he was still alive. Gave him his meds religiously and feared the day I am now facing. The vet called him her miracle heart patient because of how well he was doing. He was the happiest boy I have ever met. Always smiling and wagging his tail. He used to do things just to make me laugh and he followed me everywhere. Wake up in the middle of his naps or at night just to make sure I was still there and I did the same with him.

My husband and I had our own special communication with him. We'd scrunch our hand at him and he'd wag his tail every time and smile. We could wave him to us without saying a word and he'd happily trot to us. Tap on the floor and he'd know we were showing him where his treats or food that he missed.

Then last November he was diagnosed with kidney disease as well. He had pneumonia and was refusing food. I was so convinced we were going to lose him, but eventually after trying every trick to get him to eat and with the help of antibiotics he came back and for a while seemed great.

The decline snuck up on us. He started losing his balance, zoning out here and there.. sleeping more. Gradually not waking up and getting out of bed with us in the morning and sleeping in later, eating less, losing muscle.

Then last Wednesday he started eating less. We got his kidneys flushed and our sweet vet did everything she could to try to help him feel well enough to eat, but by Saturday I knew I wasn't getting so lucky this time around. He was telling me he was done. We spent the rest of the weekend with him and let him go this morning. And now I'm lost.

I've lost many many animals over the years to old age, cancer, seizures and more. I've bawled my eyes out and wished more than anything I could change things but in the end Nakotah was always there. Through everything. All the loses, all the good and bad times. He was always there following me from room to room. Now I feel like my whole world has crashed down around me. My home isn't my home anymore. I feel like I'm living in a strangers house. No peace and no comfort. He was my very first dog and now I feel like the chapter that held my entire adult life is done and over with now, but I wasn't ready to let go. I would have never been ready to let go.

RIP my sweet boy. I hope you're with my dad now.

Sadness Extremely unexpected loss tonight

We just had to very unexpectedly put our German shepherd down tonight. Came home from lunch 100% fine. Come home from work, he hadn’t moved from the spot I left him in. Didn’t get up to bark when I opened the garage door.

Walk inside and he was lethargic. His stomach was swollen.

Take him to the emergency vet. They get him right back and within 10 minutes they told me the ultrasound showed a mass in his stomach ruptured. He was bleeding internally.

They said they could do emergency surgery but if he survived that he might live 3-5 months.

We had to make the hardest decision to put Kai down tonight. Totally caught off guard and unexpectedly.

They said there was no way to know he had that mass growing inside him through normal yearly check ups.

He was about 8 1/2 months old born on Valentine’s Day

He was the best boi up until the end.

Sadness A few hours after the loss of my little girl

My beautiful girl, today, October 26, 2026, at 10:00, your little heart had to stop beating. You fought with all your might: you faced stomach issues in 2022, liver problems in 2025, a urinary tract infection in early 2026, an injury to your hind legs caused by a poorly administered injection in mid-2026, and two mammary tumors in August 2026. Your little heart simply couldn’t hold on any longer. From October 10, 2026, things became difficult; on October 14, I rushed you to the vet for your arthritis injection, and the first thing I said was, "Doctor, I am losing my girl." We began treatment with intravenous fluids and ran tests, but on the 20th, the vet noticed something unusual in your breathing—you had developed a pleural effusion. We started a new treatment, but I can’t stop asking myself: could I have done something better? Could I have changed anything, my sweet girl? As I say goodbye today, I ask for your forgiveness. I never wanted to lose you after all these years. Sometimes, I would wake up crying because I had dreamed that something happened to you—but at least then, I could hold you. Tonight is the first night that this nightmare has become reality, only now, I can no longer hold you.

I bid you farewell as I shed this tear; for although I took photographs of you during our final years together, there was a long period at the beginning from which I have nothing left—save for the images I hold in my memory. Why didn’t I make the most of the time we spent together? Why didn’t I keep a camera close at hand? Though I know we shall meet again soon, allow me to fulfill my purpose—sharing love here—before I join you once more. Please, visit me whenever you can; I would love that.

Impending Loss About to lose my childhood cat 3 months after my ESA

Almost exactly 3 months ago, I lost my ESA of 10 years to GI cancer. It has been such a devastating loss and I have only recently gotten to the point that I can look at old pictures of him without completely breaking down.

Since then, it has just been me and my childhood cat. She is 18 and has been in my life since I was 10 years old, but I have been taking care of her alone for the past couple of years. Within the past month, she has experienced extreme cognitive decline and that, along with several ongoing physical health issues, has led me to make the difficult decision to have her put down, which will be happening tomorrow.

I’m an absolute mess and it hasn’t even happened yet. I’m so scared to be alone, but I’m not ready for another pet. If anyone could offer any words of advice or encouragement, it would be much appreciated.

Vent No one prepares us

Friday I lost my best friend of 13 years. My dog, Benny, was by my side through so much. The last couple of weeks his health was deteriorating, things happened really fast, and I had to make the decision to let him go so that he didn't suffer. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but I am trying to accept that it was right. I'm trying so hard to remember all the love and happy memories, but it haunts me. I miss him so much.

No one can prepare you for the grief. I wouldn't wish this upon anyone. Cheers to my little man though, he was the best.

Advice Wanted My cat being sad is tearing me up.

My 9 year old sweet boy cat died suddenly almost two weeks ago now. My 5 year old cat I got so he could have a friend has been such a sweet girl and attached to my hip trying to comfort me because she knows something is wrong. She won’t eat without me eating too, within the first few days 1 when I’ve was gone she has pooped outside of the litter box (when I’m home she’s using it properly), and she has been sniffing the house constantly - I think looking for him, and overall seems confused and less playful than normal. When I got home from the ER the night that it happened, I had her smell the kennel to know he was in it, and when I got his clipping back from cremation I let her sniff that as well hoping she would know it was his smell and understand something happened. Someone sent me a custom portrait of my sweet boy to help me grieve and she saw it and got excited til she realized it wasn’t actually him. I can barely function without crying as it is, and when I’ve managed to hold it together and notice that she is having a difficult time with this, it is breaking me even more. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to he here for her more than I already am or if all of the things I’m trying to show her all of my love is enough. How do I help her? What can I do to comfort her more than I already am?

Sadness my dog joined my cat today

i lost my 17 year old cat nutmeg in april to a stroke, and my 12 year old shih tzu crunchie today to heart failure. they were like total siblings, they had fights one minute and cuddled the next, and they both fought for my attention. ever since nutmeg died crunchie was on a noticeable mood decline. he stood next to her all day when she had her stroke and kissed her goodbye when we brought her home. they’re buried next to each other in our garden with their toys and blankets now. saying crunchie is gone or anything similar literally doesnt feel real. i’m 22 and both of these animals have been in my life since they were puppies, so over half of my life. i’m totally lost without them but i’m really happy knowing they’re both okay now

Vent My mom cleaned Bailey’s nose prints off the front door 💔

This afternoon I noticed my mom cleaned Bailey’s nose prints off the front door. The last few weeks of her life Bailey spent a lot of time at the front door barking at cats. It’s very devastating to lose a piece of my girl. I had a meltdown and cried hysterically for a while then cried some more and now I just feel dead inside. There’s nothing I can do to fix this.

Please share if you’ve experienced something like this. Or please share some kind words to help validate how upset I am. Please be gentle. I am hurting 💔

Sadness I don't know if I did right by saying goodbye to my soul dog

My sweet dog was 14 years old and I had to make the decision to let him go at 3 AM this morning. It's been a hard last couple of years managing arthritis and many times when I thought we were to the end but we managed through it with medications, supplements, at-home vet visits, and wonderful physical therapists that made his last six months more enjoyable. I don't think I was always the best dog mom but I made up for it in the last several years and everything I did was with him in mind. The rugs, the bed on the floor, the cooked food, the cost of it all, worth it. I owe him my life. Truly. This has been a devastating year for me all around and I knew this time was coming. I tried so hard to plan for it. I called Lap of Love. I talked to my at-home vet. But the last week and a half or so, he was rejecting his food and medication off and on and on Saturday, I took him to the emergency vet where we admitted him for kidney issues. He also presented with anemia and some nodes on his chest.

I told them I did not want to treat the cancer, but if we kept him there and got his kidneys in a better state, I could get him home to consult with my vet if it was time so we could do in home euthanasia. They admitted him and I went home to sleep a bit. When I got back the next morning, I crawled into the kennel with him and he got up and nuzzled into my armpit. I held him and stayed with him in the kennel all day. They moved us to a room in the evening. He's a reactive dog so we had a room the first day but in the kennel I thought he would be drugged enough to sleep and ignore the smells. I kept him calm and covered his ears with a blanket and had him fall asleep with my hand in front of his nose to mask other scents. I'd mentioned the reactivity so they got us a room again and made up the bed. But he just seemed to be getting worse. I just wanted to get through the night again and get him home when I could talk to his vet and make a plan. But as the night went on, I started to worry that I was prolonging it for myself. He was just staring and panting. He started to pee in the bed. I know he was highly medicated but the vet thought that something more insidious was happening. I kept questioning if I was doing the right thing. When I asked her twice point blank, she said the decision to euthanize him now is a decision I fully support you in. When she saw him the night before, he was in the same pain. We put him to sleep at 3 AM.

I hate everything about this. All of the things I tried to avoid happened. I was so diligent in his care because I didn't want any regrets and now I'm filled with what if's. He had a nice walk the morning before we went in but I know he wasn't feeling well. We didn't sleep in the bed together the night before but we did nap in the bed that morning. I was in such a rush to get him to the clinic I didn't take the time to really assess. The first vet didn't think it was the end of the road. I really thought, we'll get him out of here and home where it's comfortable.

I worry that I took his reaction to the pain medication as a tell all. I was looking into his eyes and I couldn't tell what he wanted but he wasn't responsive to me in the end. He wouldn't really look at me unless I was really at eye level. He wouldn't lift his head. It wasn't him. I keep thinking if I could've had him tapered off and on to something else would I have seen a glimpse of himself. We took the feeding tube out and it seemed like he perked up but then he was so stressed. I just don't know what would have happened. I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to keep him comfortable for long enough and then to get him home and manage him on my own until I could get in touch with an in-home service. I should have chatted with Lap of Love just to check and I didn't. How am I going to live with these feelings of regret? I'm just sick to my stomach for leaving him that first night and for taking him at all. Maybe I should have had Lap of Love come and assess him first but I really thought maybe it's a dental issue or he's constipated. I worry that the emergency room created a great deal of trauma and stress that made it all snowball. I told him at one point, you have to eat this food and they'll let you go home and he did lick it which if you know what a picky eater he was, you'd know that was successful. But the vet didn't consider that to be enough. Now I don't know if I should've have advocated more or if it would have caused more pain and stress. I feel like he wasn't looking at me because he didn't think it was the right decision. He wanted to go home.

I just don't know and it's all so fresh. But I do know I love him more than anything in this whole world. I had him for 13 years. He was my soulmate, my get out of bed dog. We've been through it all. I held him and snuggled him and kissed him so much, even in the end. I told him I loved him over and over again. I love him so fiercely, I don't know how to live without him. I'm worried we'll never see our babies again in any kind of afterlife. I'm worried I'll get a pet psychic reading and they'll say he wasn't ready. He was mad you didn't get him home like you promised. How do we move past it all? I know I did right by him in many ways but I feel like I failed him in the very end. I can't shake the feeling that it wasn't the right decision. I'm heartbroken.

Sadness Guilt and Sadness over girlfriends dog passing

I (24m) have never had a pet in my cognizant life. My family had a cat who died before I was 5, and that I don’t remember. My partner had a small dog who grew really attached too. This is her only pet. We are long distance so I rarely saw this dog but I really loved it. He was older than the average age for his breed, moderately overweight, and had several tumors. Due to his weight and age the family decided not to put him through treatment and just make him as comfortable as possible. He was put down today, and I am devastated. I feel extremely guilty for how I am feeling as he was not my dog. I don’t feel as though it is fair to put this on my girlfriend as she has had this dog since she was 11. I want to let her feel how she feels without feeling the need to comfort me as she has a tendency to put her feelings aside when she senses someone she cares about is hurting. I don’t know what to do with this feeling, no one else understands why I am as upset as I am because of the fact I was not this dogs owner. I loved him and until I met him I never really understood the impact an animal can have on one’s life.
