US Midterm Elections Megathread

Hello! We haven't done this before but let's try it and see how it goes! Election day is a week away (Tuesday, November 3rd) so now is a great time to make time to review the 14 statewide propositions, bunch of elected offices and local measures on your ballot.

You can use this thread to discuss who and how to vote if you would like but we'll be monitoring it for civility in discussions just to keep things productive and from spiraling. We'll keep an eye out for other threads popping up and redirect them here.

Let's see how this goes!

Favorite Tree in Sacramento?

Post image

I know a lot of you have a favorite tree here in Sacramento, let’s see it! Tell us why it is important to you. Here’s mine on Vallejo Way across from Cal Middle School. I love it for its size, the way it shades not only the house but the entire street, and because of the memories that I’ve made along this street passing by this tree many times in the past. 🌳 🌲

The Jackrabbit Trail officially opened up a new traffic signal on the bike trail across Arena Boulevard. Previously, you would have to go down to the main intersection to cross on the crosswalk now you can just use a bike trail crossing. The project was about 10 years in the making with the first community outreach in 2017.

In case you didn’t know: you can donate (certain) vegetation from your yard to the Sac Zoo!

Saw this posted at Talini’s nursery on Folsom blvd. Apparently an old employee there now works for the zoo so they left this info. Pretty cool!

It’s shredded coconut inside the candied skin of a lime and it’s absolutely divine. I need to find a local source for this new favorite of mine (please and thank you)!

Finding a home for an extremely friendly stray cat

Post image
• Upvotes

A stray has been hanging around my place for the past week or so and im looking for a forever home for it. It is extremely friendly to people and strangers, will even let us pick it up. I am personally of the belief it was abandoned here by its original owners as it very much gives off inside cat vibes and its very used to humans. Its not doing well outside unfortunately, its skinny and may be getting a little sick. Im not sure of the gender or if it is fixed. It looks to be about adult or perhaps late teenager aged. Black and very fluffy. I would bring it inside myself but I already have cats and they dont take to other cats well. SPCA Isnt being any help. Ive already asked around and all my neighbors don’t claim it. I am willing to drive it to you myself but I do ask for a payment of $20. I would prefer not to but this is simply to hopefully ward away people who would wish to harm it. You may message here or my phone number, 916-430-7072.

Best place to get cheap physical media.

I’m in the process of building out my library on my Plex server I recently finished. Working towards cutting the cord with as many streaming services as I possibly can.

Where are some good places in Sacramento to get cheap DVDs and Blu-rays?

I’m in Citrus Heights if that matters at all. Stay safe everyone!

Discussion: Has the Sacramento "Revival" ended and if so when did it end?

I grew up in Sacramento for most of my life (unfortunately had to move for work) and I remember around 2017 and 2018 the sheer amount of articles that came out saying that Sacramento was the "hidden gem" of California and that it was about to take the next step in its growth. The amount of development and publicity showed that it very well could. The Ice Blocks, Press Building, 1430Q and many other mid rise expensive apartments were being built left and right. Golden 1 Center just opened up and projects like 700K, The Frederic, Sacramento Commons, and the Hyatt were built Downtown to help sustain foot traffic. Lady Bird put the city in the national spotlight. People were raving about our food scene and coffee scene. Zoo was looking to expand in Natomas to a whopping 183 acres. Transit wise, the streetcar and I St. bridge were looking to get on their way plus talks about potential Green Line and Blue Line expansion.

Edit: on top of that this is when there was crazy hype about the Railyards, T9, Sacramento Commons, Aggie Square, and Bridge District being rapidly growing up and coming spots.

Now 10 years later... and doesn't it seem like all that hype kind of died down or didn't come to be? Construction as a whole has slowed to pretty much a standstill, a ton of projects (Lot X, 17th and J (SKK Development project), Beer Books Site) have stalled out or got cancelled. Restaurants seem to be closing at a fairly fast pace. Downtown, in particular K Street, is struggling and so is DOCO. Zoo expansion is pretty much off the books except for a small expansion. All the articles about how Sacramento was growing seems to have disappeared. Transit wise, I St bridge was killed and Green Line (as light rail) has been killed in favor of BRT, streetcar proposal is effectively dead, and Blue Line won’t get started until around 2040.

^ Edit 2: also in response to that, Railyards is growing slower than people thought (yes the soccer stadium and hospital is being built, but no new housing or really any amenities like parks have been announced), Township 9 and Sacramento Commons has stalled out since the last wave of construction around 2021-2023. Bridge District and Aggie Square has not boomed like expected.

Maybe the hype dying down is good for affordability, but it just seems like the city is back to being kind of at a impasse. Admittedly, I'm not only enough to have seen other "promises" of the city taking the next step like in the 90s and especially in the early 2000s when Skyscrapers were being planned left and right a la 301 Capitol Mall before the housing crash. That being said though, does anyone else agree that the "Revival" that Sacramento had around 2016-2019 ended and that things are kind of regressing when it comes to development, foot traffic, and culture?

Plastic in food at Journey to The Dumpling on 21st street

Post image
44 Upvotes

Got this blue piece of plastic in my garlic noodles at Journey to the Dumpling on 21st street in Sacramento. I've been going here for years and I know these things happen, but pretty bummed that I emailed them twice and they didn't have the courtesy to respond to my email. I wasn't asking for anything, I was just letting them know what happened so they could identify what is blue and plastic and ending up in the food so it can be preventive from happening again. Super wack customer service IMO

This feels like a pretty good sign, especially considering how desperately Matsui has been trying to buy the election. The volume of truly disgustingly vicious attack-ad fliers that are showing up from Matsui in my mailbox is shocking.

We're expanding our California political reporting. What do you want Sacramento reporters asking?

Politics affects Californians every day, not just during election season.

That's why CBS Sacramento (KOVR Ch. 13 and KMAX Ch. 31) is expanding our Emmy Award-winning Bear Politics franchise into a dedicated, year-round political reporting unit focused on state and local government, public policy, elections and the decisions that affect communities across California. The unit brings together political reporters Steve Large and Darrielle Fair, along with political analyst Gary Dietrich, to provide reporting, interviews and analysis across our broadcast, streaming and digital platforms.

As we head toward the Nov. 3 election and beyond, we're interested in hearing from Californians:

What is one question you wish California political reporters would ask elected officials more often?

We'll be reading the comments.

Seeking good massage therapist for chronic pain/injury/scoliosis etc

Hi! I have severe scoliosis which resulted in a painful spinal fusion about a decade ago, then I was in a car wreck about 7 years ago that made things worse and I have a frozen shoulder and bulging discs, plus the titanium rods in my spine cause pain too. As I’m getting older, I’m experiencing more pain, and usually massage helps A LOT!
I had a good massage therapist for a few years but due to life circumstances she had to retire and is no longer doing it. So I came on here several months ago and asked for recommendations!

The first person I tried looked awesome but was totally full and not accepting new clients. The second CMT didn’t respond. I tried a third local CMT and she responded, sounded cool and had openings, so I bought a package and booked an appointment and they literally just canceled on me, 3 hours before the appointment 😳

So, I’d love some new recommendations! I don’t care if they work out of their house or at a clinic, just as long as they are good at what they do!

Thank you!!🙏😊

Long shot I know - bike got stolen from a backyard Saturday night in midtown near sutters landing.

XL Black trek marlin, has a gray milk carton ziptied to the back, pink&yellow zipties on the frame

I've had this bike for years but somehow only have the two low quality photos attached, am not much of a documenter it turns out

If you see this bike please message me; though I know its likely in a 10 bike meth contraption by now.

Risk tolerance extremely high to get this back, have been driving around known spots to no avail so far & checking online ofc. Please advise

Lost wallet near Flamingo House (2315 K Street) around 1am on Sunday 10/25

• Upvotes

Hi all!

I know this is a long shot, but can anyone help me find my wallet? It is small and is made of brown leather. A very simple, masculine wallet (although I am a woman).

I lost my wallet last night when leaving silent disco at the Flamingo House around 1:30am. I was sober, so all I can think is that it fell out of my pocket unbeknownst to me. I know I had it when I was leaving because I exchanged the headphones for my ID and then promptly put my ID back into my wallet. I have retraced my steps, checked my friend's entire vehicle, and checked all over my home. None of my cards have been used, so I don't suspect that it has been stolen/picked up by a thief. I plan to call Flamingo House when they open tomorrow.

If anyone has any idea or found a wallet last night, it would be so helpful. I need to leave back to the bay area tonight because I nanny for my brother tomorrow. I quit my job to do that for him while going to school and do not have the means now to replace all of the items in my wallet if need be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
