I've been through all of Clove's lifetime in Ranked, and on release, it was undoubtedly pretty good. But even in its current state, in most ranks, Clove is still averaging close to a 55% Non-Mirror win rate.
My question is why? The ult is good, yes. Undoubtedly, an extra life right in the middle of the action very rarely doesn't get value, especially if you recognize what times are good to pop it in. A good ultimate doesn't result in those numbers. The heal is temporary, the speed boost we will get back to, and the meddle is like a fade seize that doesn't seize.
That leaves smokes on death and the speed boost from the pick me up. I just don't see how these are worthwhile abilities. A stim beacon (apparently before the update it was actually better than a stim beacon, but regardless) does not make brimstone the scourge of ranked. And the dead smokes last such a short time, the only way they ever get value is if your teammate sticks the spike for a second, and then you smoke him off.
So is there something intrinsic about Clove that lets Clove players dominate? I don't think it's agent mastery, because a whole cohort of players being better at their agent doesn't seem right. Is it the playstyle of being with the team and spearheading a brazen rush that's just more tuned to ranked? Maybe, but Clove doesn't let you do that any better than any other agent, and the 7s smoke isn't good enough that Clove dying is less of a loss than normal. Only the Ult helps in this scenario, but the Ult is not up every round, and I don't see how the opportunity cost is paid.
I should also mention that empirically, I hate seeing Cloves in my team, because they're more often than not very bad at smoke timings, which is only exacerbated by the shorter smokes. Which brings you this definitely-not-a-rant about Clove. I can't speak of personal experience on the win rate numbers, because I almost exclusively play Omen as a controller, play worse on Clove than Omen, and other people playing Clove if I'm playing somethibg else don't do anything they couldn't on another agent, usually easier.
In the end, besides what I see as obvious facts, the numbers still paint Clove to be an astonishingly out of par agent. Some people are calling for a nerf just because of that, but I see no reason to play the agent currently anyways. So does Clove need a nerf? A rework? An investigation for Fraud? Or do my randoms need to shut the fuck up about me playing Omen?
Tldr; Clove bad imo, why winrate still so high?
