Questions about joining the US Air Force, whether enlisting or commissioning as an officer, prior-service or not, should be posted in /r/AirForceRecruits.

Question Ramstein summer dorm

E3 20 years old - Headed to Ramstein in January. (In Korea now, quick trip home to the states to see family before checking in) Family mentioned Germany/all of Europe was extremely hot this summer and to buy a fan (or fans) now for the dorm. Not sure what dorms I’ll be in yet. I have a fan in my Korean dorm that I will ship over? Necessary to buy another?

What are the dorms like over there? I’ve been pretty lucky to have a room/bathroom and kitchen to myself in Korea. I know I’ll be sharing a space again.

Definitely looking forward to traveling.

Searching through old posts but anything I should for sure bring/ leave/ set up before arrival?

Thanks

Question IPAP Inquiry

I am an A1C who originally wanted to commission, but some funding issues with college prevented that. I am looking for more insight than what is available online about this program, if anyone here has gone through it. How many times did you apply, and what did your package look like when it was accepted? I have about two years before I will be able to apply; is there anything you would have done differently this early in your process? Any additional advice or information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Question Traditional Reserve/Guard C-17 and tanker pilots

What does the schedule look like?

Whats the days flying like? Is it 1-2 weeks trips or 1-3 day trips?

Is there anyone who has an actual job that’s not an airline pilot?

Would you be able to take a few months off transitioning from AD to reserved and only do a local on a Saturday while going through civilian job training like a firefighter academy?

Question Tinker AFB vs Wright-Patterson AFB for civilian

Hey all, army vet here. Got job offers for a really sick position in the Air Force, that is done by both Airmen and civilians. Trying to decide which place to go for. I am coming from PA. I love how Tinker is in Oklahoma, you have that wild-west midwest cowboy stuff, being close to Tulsa, and Oklahoma City still provides a city thing that I am familiar with being around from Philly. But Ohio would be closer, and I heard that is a pretty good place. I am in my late 20's, no kids.

What would you guys go with?

I love fishing/hunting/outdoor stuff, but dont want to be far away from civilization. I never lived out in the west before so Tinker is a little more appealing to me, they have the sand dunes 2 hours away, and stuff like that I never experienced before. I know there are tornadoes and stuff but oh well.

Also got offered Mconnell AFB.

Question Anyone know any good belts for OCPs?

Right now I have one of the Propper quick-release belts, but it’s too big to fit through my belt loops so actually putting it on is kind of a bitch. Anyone know any good models/types for OCPs that don’t slip?

Question Assignments, DEROS,DOS

Hello everyone!

My question is- Will I still be considered for another overseas assignment with only one year of retainability, or am I more likely to be sent stateside?

I’m currently stationed overseas with a DEROS of September 2027. My original DOS was May 2028, but I recently extended my contract by four months to have a full year of retainability so I could play in the upcoming overseas assignment listing on November 4th. My goal is to get another overseas assignment rather than return stateside. I also have family accompanying me, so I’m hoping to volunteer for extended-long tours.

However, after reading a few threads, I’m starting to wonder if I made a mistake by extending for only one year.

I’ve seen people mention that you need enough retainability to cover the entire length of your next overseas tour, but I was under the impression that additional retainability could be obtained once selected for an assignment.

I’m a first-term Airman, and this will be my 1st PCS to another base other than from tech school, so I’m still learning how the assignment process works.

I’ve already spoken with my leadership, but I’d appreciate some clarification or firsthand experiences from anyone who has been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance!

Question FB groups / Ramstein

Is Facebook useful for PCS to Ramstein?

I deleted mine years ago, but I’m wondering if I need to reactivate (ugh) for this pcs.

When we were there (Spang) last time, the various groups were useful for finding house rentals and landlord reviews, base updates and events, invites from spouse groups, etc.

Are the groups still pretty active and useful, or mostly trash now like the rest of FB, and I wouldn’t be missing out without it?

Question Want more information?

I was born on Kadena, Air Force base in Aug 1981. I want more info on the base.
Anyone got crazy stories from the early years.
My mom was involved in a horrible accident outside of the base in 81/82, and just passed away and never had stories to tell. I found some pictures of the area but can’t remember any of the island.

Discussion Discharged with UOTHC

He got discharged with a UOTHC. I think if he had written something different for his unsworn statement, the outcome might have been very different. If, instead of blaming everyone else and contradicting himself, he had said, “I have no excuse for what I did, and I regret hurting my wife", and listed everything he’s learned in therapy this past year, I think the board might have considered recommending a General discharge.

I was expecting that from him, though. He can’t sit with the discomfort of his own shame and guilt, so it’s easier to make me the villain than to accept that he f#cked up.

I didn’t portray myself as an angel or as someone who bore no responsibility. I know I also hurt him, but not to the extent that he hurt me. That’s why the Recorder said I was one of the most credible witnesses he has ever worked with. Because I owned my sh#t right there in front everyone. But man, I never grabbed a piece of wood and beat the sh#t out of him with it like he did to me.

He told me about the stress at work—one of the excuses he gave in his unsworn statement. I do understand that part, but man, he was always able to take a nap whenever he wanted or unwind whenever he needed to. I did everything around the house, including the yardwork and taking out the trash, during the week so the weekends were just for chilling or whatever.

I bought a massage gun so I could give him massages whenever he was stressed out. I listened to him every single time he opened up about whatever he was going through. One night, he needed to fix his car, and it was raining. I put on my boots, grabbed an umbrella, and held it over him until he was done. Without. Him. Asking. Me.

Every time he forgot his uniform top or headgear, I brought it to him on base. When his tire blew out, I picked him up and hung out with him until the tire shop finished fixing it. I celebrated every single one of his birthdays, even though he didn’t celebrate mine. I was there for him. Always. F#cking always. Even when he wasn’t there for me.

I had to bite my tongue during the board when his ADC was questioning me because those are the rules of the game. I stuck to answering the questions and telling the truth.

But yeah, it hurt to see that he is still the same. I thought that maybe this would lead him to change and keep him from doing this to someone else in the future. That’s the only reason I reported him. And it was not easy to do. No, no. I spent days in a hotel room crying and thinking about my marriage, the good times, our plans, and our dreams. This was one of the most difficult decisions of my life.

I really hope that one day he understands that what he did goes against everything that is good. I hope he understands that my actions didn’t come from hate.

And I hope you guys in the Air Force and other branches take this as an example of who not to become.

Question Another OWA from home PC post

About a month ago I was able to log into any .mil website from my home laptop. Two weeks ago I was TDY and couldn't log in. Assuming it was something to do with the hotel's network and the fact I was using a VPN, I left it be and decided to try again when I returned home. Last week I was getting the same results "certificate validation failed." This is frustrating because I'm not even getting a prompt to select a certificate.

So far I've tried making sure the installroot certificates are up to date, removed my certificates and had them added again, turned off my VPN, and made sure that the port my reader was connected to wasn't powering down.

At this point I'm at a complete loss as to why I've loss the ability to check email from my home laptop while TDY. Any and all suggestions as well as downvotes are appreciated.
