Mod Important Mod Update: Introducing r/ARFIDresearch

Greetings, friends!!
The r/ARFID mod team is proud to announce a new sister subreddit, r/ARFIDresearch. So, what is that and how did all that happen?

For years, we required prior approval from anyone who wanted to post here on r/ARFID to recruit for their research projects. However, those posts did not typically get a lot of traction– many of them were irrelevant to ARFID or tried to bypass mod review. The mod team recognized that the status quo wasn’t working, and last year, we surveyed the community asking how they felt about research recruitment posts. Overwhelmingly, commenters told us that they didn’t want to see that here– this was a support space first and foremost, and they didn’t want to feel like they were being observed or recruited by researchers.

As a result of that feedback, we banned individual project/research posts and delegated everything to our Megathread, which is unfortunately where everything went to die. The Megathread has gone largely ignored, and we still regularly get requests from researchers who want to post (which we reject automatically).

The mod team has been debating amongst ourselves for a few months now– we don’t want to go against the sentiment here that r/ARFID should be a support space. However, we also recognize that research on ARFID is extremely limited. And, in the past we have had members of our community develop tools, apps, and other projects with the goal of raising awareness and supporting others with the condition. We hate to stand in the way of that progress.

As a result of that discussion, we came to this– if r/ARFID is a support space first, why not make a new space that CAN accommodate research and project posts? Anyone who wants to participate and contribute can join, and anyone who prefers to stick to just support posts can stick around here and ignore the new subreddit entirely.

The new subreddit is still under construction and it will certainly evolve over time, but we wanted to announce this and start opening it up to researchers and project developers. As always, our team is very open to ideas and questions about this new space and how to use it well!

Ultimately, the mod team’s goal has always been to create a space that benefits the ARFID community. At the same time, we’ve always been passionate about creating a better system for this community that is so often failed by the status quo. We’re hopeful that this new space will be a step towards a better world for the next generation of ARFID sufferers, and the neurodivergent community as a whole.

With love,
Your r/ARFID mod team

Meme Food aggression (small vent)

It just feels so unfair sometimes. They get to eat literally everything we have in the house, do they really need to eat one of the few things that are the stuff I basically live on?

I know it's kind of dumb, because just bc it's a safe food doesn't mean it belongs to me and they can never have it. Yet I can't help but feel jealous...

Occasionally if I can get my executive dysfunction ass into the store I can buy something for myself and label it, and then they won't eat it... But I rarely get to do that and they judge me for it when I do (because sharing is caring or whatever). At least not as much as they used to. Oh well...

(idk whether to flair this as meme or vent, because it's both, mods shall smite me)

Venting/Ranting Unsure where I stand with arfid

• Upvotes

Not sure what flair sorry :/

Basically, I have never been formally diagnosed, however as a kid I had to go to a dietician (before arfid was officially a thing) as my parents were very stressed about my eating habits. My whole life I have only really eaten completely plain pasta with salt, some forms of fries and nuggets and junk food (only specific flavours).

I struggle with finding the motivation to eat and find I never crave anything, and any sort of soggy texture can make me gag intensely. Recently I have found myself in a new living situation where I felt very uncomfortable being as picky as I am, as well as finding myself getting completely sick of my comfort foods and I FORCED myself to try new things.

Almost every meal I still gag eating it, but I’m slowly getting the hang of trying different foods comfortably and really look forward to the cooking process.

I don’t know if I still have arfid? I’m not sure really if it’s something you can grow out of and considering I still struggle I really don’t know where I stand. I can’t branch out of my comfort snacks yet, only trying actual meals so far but I do feel like I’m learning and getting better?

My health's not great so my hairs been thinning for awhile... there's very few things I feel safe eating. Are there any supplements I can take to help strengthen my hair.

I can't swallow pills and I don't really consider Anything gummy easy to stomach so liquid supplement recommendations are the most helpful.

Venting/Ranting Welp, tried cooking (i have a long safe food list but have no real Interest in food) and now its for my s/o TW: emetophobia.

Not only do i have ARFID. But OCD when it comes to food and my kitchen. I get terrified the alarms will go off. The food processor sets me off sensory wise. Doing the dishes will cause me to cry mid doing it. The kitchen is just not a fun place for me. I have to smell my clean dishes before i even think about using them.

HOWEVER i really need to stop using uber eats to get wendys, McDonald's etc that while are safe and consistent. EXPENSIVE.

So I'm doing my best to cook at home, and thats HARD. I work as a barista so when i get home, the last thing i really want to do is cook in my most anxiety inducing place.

I made a dairy free corn chowder, I've had corn chowder before. I added beans and potatoes to kind of make it more filling. The last bite, i don't know? My spoon suddenly smelled like fish and i immediately gagged. Corn chowder ruined for me. Thankfully my s/o liked it. All his 😭

But damn it 😭😭😭😭

Tips and Advice What even is arfid at this point

Not sure if this is the right flair.

I was formally diagnosed with ARFID a few years ago. I'm still only 14, so figuring out what that means has been a learning experience. My mother described it as my body not telling me if i'm hungry unless i'm really really hungry, and that my diet is restricted primarily because this caused me to only eat when i'm really hungry, and thus only eat comfort foods. She has been very supporting, but i'm starting to call this definition into question. It doesn't fit into one of the three subtypes, as far as i'm aware, and it's not how i've seen others describe their arfid experience. It also just seems to not perfectly line up with my life. There are times where i go a while without eating anything substantial and then just kinda crash (shaky, emotional, lightheaded) but it's not exactly that i didn't get hunger signals until then, it just follows a pattern of get hungry -> eat a light snack (without many carbs) -> get hungry again until it's been a few hours since i've actually had more than a couple glasses of chocolate milk and a couple oreos. I still feel hungry, but then stop feeling hungry around 10 minutes later regardless of how much i've eaten. I do notice that i am usually hungry at school (it's around 4 hours between when i eat lunch and when i get home, with little to no snacks in between) which my classmates don't seem to have issues with. I know that my arfid is at least somewhat influenced by autism and hypersensitivity. I'm just not sure at this point what arfid actually means. Can someone fill me in?

Resource Sharing A neurodivergent friendly dietitian on YouTube

I found an account on YouTube where a dietitian gives, in my opinion, very good advice on nutrition keeping in mind the difficulty of being neurodivergent and she also speaks about ARFID, since many people here have spoken about needing guidance but being unable to get to a professional I thought this was good to share.

One of the things that helped me the most was being able to speak to a nutritionist specialised not only in eating disorders but also neurodivergence so I hope this resource can help you too.

Edit: if the link isn't working the name is @nataliefoxRD

Tips and Advice How do you eat?

Im undiagnosed but I haven’t had a meal in weeks. I just open my fridge and stare, I can feel I need food but also I’m confused if im actually hungry or not. Then, I’m over whelmed with the thought of eating and the cycle repeats. I feel like food is going to be spoiled, or im too uninterested in the thought of food. Ive lost so much muscle, ive been getting sick way more, little to no energy, constantly in a brain fog.

I just want to eat but my mind doesn’t want me to.

How do I eat when nothing interesting me?

Tips and Advice I’m scared to eat from the freezer

I’ve got meat in the freezer that’s got the use by date as July (but of course it was frozen before that until now). How do I convince myself it’s fine to eat? I know it’s fine to eat but I’m so fearful of actually doing so, I don’t know what to do

Does anyone have any advice? :,>

Feeding Tube

I learned from my therapist recently that if you in a get bad enough state physically, doctors have the optioj to install a feeding tube port in you so you don't just starve to death.

I'm not personally near that point yet, but I found it really helpful to know that if this gets any worse than it is - there are other options.

It's really helpful for me to know what the next step could be if the step I'm on doesn't help or work, so I figured it might be helpful for others to know.

I hope I don't get to that point - honestly, I hope I just lose my sense of taste - but, I feel better knowing they (health professionals) probably won't just let me starve to death.

Do I Have ARFID? Not sure if I have ARFID

Hello all, I'm currently trying to figure out whether I might have ARFID or if my relationship with food is just sensory issues stemming from ADHD (which I have been diagnosed with)

Growing up I didn't have much trouble eating whatever my parents put on the table, and I'm still able to eat a wide variety of foods, but over these past couple years I've developed some sensitivities that have gotten increasingly difficult to deal with.

It's mostly food residue. I have strong emotional reactions to touching, smelling, even looking at it, I can't wash dishes, can't even use the cutting board if it's covered in leftover crumbs from my brother's toast. I hate the WORD "crumbs". I'm scared to even open the dishwasher out of fear that I'll see some stray gunk. Oh, and I hate smelling sinks, fridges, trashcans full of food.

I used to love baking, now I can't do it without breaking down in tears, even if everything looks clean. Even going in the kitchen to fill up my water bottle can be a battle on my worse days.

Eating feels like much more of a chore to me now as well. I'd rather starve than eat food that I'm disinterested in, and my brain has made up so many hyper-specific rules as to what I do and don't like. There are still a lot of foods that I DO like though.

I'm just confused. I don't know if all this qualifies for ARFID, or ADHD, or something I haven't considered yet. I would really love some advice. I do have a therapist so I will be bringing this up with her too.

Tips and Advice Any advice?

Hello! Like many, I’ve struggled wirh ARFID since I was a kid. I’ve got a limited range of safe foods I’m able to eat, but lately I just don’t have an appetite for any of them.

For the last year or so, every so often I’ll have a week or two long period where none of my safe foods sound good. I’m in one of these right now. I spend all day dreading when I’ll have to eat, thinking about the texture and taste even if it’s something I’ve had before. It’s miserable, and I’ll end up trying to put off eating until I feel so sick I have to force something down with a protein drink. I just want my appetite to come back so I can stop dreading it. I had a panic attack earlier over feeling like this’ll never end and I’ll die (even though I know that’s irrational) Do any of you have any advice?

Do I Have ARFID? I don't eat ANY fruits, vegetables, cereals, curries, dry fruits, drink any liquid except water

So ever since I was a child, I have only eaten Indian breakfasts like idli, puri, dosa, roti for all three times of the day, without chutneys ( kinda sauces) and curries.

I don't eat even a single vegetable, fruit or a dry fruit. And I eat like 3 snack items

Just Found This Sub Why does eating feel like a chore

I do not like eating , even if i am hungry I don't feel like eating, even when i feel like eating I'd be too lazy to make something for myself. I have ppl around me forcing me to eat cuz they're obviously worried about my appetite and I'm least bothered. I really never feel like eating . I'm also a picky eater. I always wondered if its just me . Cuz ppl around me live to eat,n i am vice versa. I am pretty sure its not ED either. Is it my issue alone or anyone who relates with this?

I'm starving but I feel like I can't eat anything. I can't think of a single thing I'd eat even if I had access to all the food in the world.

Help get a UK-wide ARFID treatment pathway

Wanted to post this again to try and get enough signatures. This could save lives!

Petition: Review support for ARFID and fund national treatment pathways

ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) affects thousands across the UK, yet support remains inconsistent - creating a postcode lottery that must end. Around 1.25 million people have an eating disorder, 5% ARFID, yet many cannot access appropriate care.

Thank you!!!

How do I swallow or just eat when I’m already nauseous?

for some context I’m near constantly nauseous, and can’t really do anything about it. It’s because I don’t have the time the money or the resources to do anything about it. Most food makes me nauseous or i feel physically full when I go out y to consume it

I have tried just pushing throw it but I just be up not eating, and I have tried finding foods that don’t make me feel this way but they are all too expensive and/or taste bad. I have tried guilting myself or bribing myself. but nothing seems to change the fact that I am not hungry or that it feels worse to eat than not to.

So how do I eat?

Tips and Advice Diet changes for weight loss?

I’ve been wanting to lose some weight for a while now, but it’s so incredibly hard to change my diet to be healthier. Usually, from what I’ve seen, people with ARFID tend to be underweight more often than overweight, but my safe foods are mostly easily accessible, super unhealthy fast foods. Another issue is that I try not to eat when I’m not that hungry, but my parents get me food anyway. (fast food obviously) They won’t just not get food for their child, and I’d feel bad letting it go to waste, so sometimes I end up overeating.
I haven’t been gaining weight, but I’ve been ~30 pounds heavier than I’d like to be for years. I find it really, really hard to just cut things out of my diet, and mainly struggle with finding alternatives to the things I always eat. Has anyone been in my situation? I have pretty stereotypical safe foods/textures, and I’m desperately looking for any easy to prepare, healthier meals.

Triggering Locations? Times of Day?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you experience more difficulty eating in certain locations (certain stressors, not necessarily the food itself causing problems)?

Also, are the times of day that seem more difficult than others?

Thanks! Just seeing what everyone's experiences are as I work to pin down a better diagnosis/treatment plan for my kiddo who may have ARFID.

Do I Have ARFID? Do I have ARFID or am I just picky?

so ever since I was a toddler I’ve always had trouble with food. Always had the same breakfast foods, same lunch (gen my lunches I eat have only changed 3 times and the last time it changed was in the 3rd grade) and usually the same dinner. whenever we were having a food for dinner that I didn’t like or hadn’t had before I would breakdown crying. I’ve of course since gotten over this but food is still hard for me. I can’t go to sleepovers, birthdays, or many other events because I’m scared there won’t be any foods I’ll eat there. My parents say I’m just picky but I think it’s deeper than that. thoughts?
