science/information Is a bird attacking your window/car mirror? Here’s why

There’s been a huge flux of posts about this recently, so here’s a pinned post with information!

Around this time of year, make birds get super territorial. They will attack any rivals they find, including their own reflection.

TO PREVENT THIS: cover up the reflective surface until the bird moves on. Cardboard works pretty well, and anti bird collision window decals should also help.

Edit: I just made a popup that gives a brief summary of this post when someone tries to post about birds hitting reflective surfaces. Hopefully that stops it, because I'm tired of having to explain it 20 times per day lol

meta I found a baby bird. What do I do? [From Cornell Lab of Ornithology]

"Most of the baby birds people find are fledglings. These are young birds that have just left the nest, and can’t fly yet, but are still under the care of their parents, and do not need our help."

Update for 2026:

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology article this post links to: I found a baby bird. What do I do?
/u/Adventurous-Year-463's summary that they recently posted to /r/birds: https://www.reddit.com/r/birds/comments/1s1o2g3/did_you_find_a_baby_bird/
I found a baby bird, now what? (in easy flowchart form) - one of last year's posts.
Found a Baby Bird? from Bird and Moon comics - cute and good for sharing!

This is the first time I've ever seen a starling this close, funnily enough I was at the zoo and it must've been visiting too!

For anyone interested, I took the photo with a Nikon Z6III and the 105mm lens

Does anyone know if this was a male or female? Im curious if there's a difference.

seeking advice/help What’s this lil guy/gal up to?

Dear bird experts!

Please help me understand what this little rascal is up to. He/She has been trying to get into the cab of the truck for about a week now... just going back and forth like this. There’s at least a second one that hangs out in a nearby tree but this one has been trying to get in 24 hours a day for almost a week. There is nothing inside but a bench seat, a steering wheel, and a sunshade. It will try on both the driver and passenger sides, as well as the rear window. It is quite vocal as well. there is also a larger group of them that frequent the yard but pay zero attention to these two or the truck.

I’m in Bend, Oregon if that is helpful.

(per rule #6 - I took this video myself.)

question Title: Is My Budgie Sky a Boy or a Girl? 🩵🐦🩷

gallery

Hi everyone!

I’m a first-time budgie owner, and I recently got two adorable budgies!

This is Sky! The seller told me Sky was a girl, but I’m starting to have some doubts.

Sky’s cere is a bright, uniform bubblegum pink/purple, which makes me wonder if Sky might actually be a male Recessive Pied budgie.

I’m still learning, so I’d love to hear your opinions! Do you think Sky is a boy or a girl?

Thank you so much for your help! 🩵🩷

All about birds! There are some more specific subreddits about bird-related topics and we encourage you to post there when your post fits the more specific forum; /r/birds is for everything they don't cover.

We welcome:

Articles about birds
Bird art
Questions and discussions about birds
Questions and discussions about bird feeders
Bird photography
Science of birds
Links to media about birds

Read the rules before posting! In brief: Post must be about birds, avoid cursing or adult-only language, no selling or commercial advertising, give the source of any art or photos, and use NSFW for injured/sick/dead birds.

Please don't message the mods asking if your post breaks the rules, if your post does not break the rules written at that link; you will not be banned for breaking secret unwritten rules.

Other subreddits:

/r/birding focuses on birding/birdwatching. It's a great place do show birds you saw on a birding trip or hike, ask about birding equipment and practices, discuss good places to go birdwatching, talk about eBird, and related topics.
/r/birdpics is mainly for posting bird photos that you've taken yourself, and seeing other people's bird photos. /r/birdphotography hosts discussion of and questions about bird photography as well as photos of birds.
/r/whatsthisbird is the reddit for posting pictures of birds you want to identify. If your question is "what kind of bird is this", that's the place to post! When posting to /r/whatsthisbird, always remember to include both the time (date or season) and place (general geographical location) in your post title.
/r/wingspan/ for the awesome, popular board game about birds.
Although we think there should be a separate subreddit for discussions about keeping domesticated / pet birds, /r/petbirds appears to be abandoned at this time. There are subreddits for specific species of birds people commonly keep, so you can search https://www.reddit.com/subreddits for your pet bird's species to see if there's a sub for it.

We do still allow some posts here that might better fit in one of those other subreddits, but consider whether your post more clearly fits into one of those and if so, we encourage you to post there.

A limited number of posts that are not about birds but are about this subreddit will be allowed. Use the "meta" tag for such a post, and search first to make sure it does not repeat the same topic as another meta post in the past few months. Meta posts will be limited so that they aren't too frequent, so not every meta post will be allowed.
