Every good deed Walt committed played a part in why people still loved him and rooted for him until the very end. Yes, he became a terrible person, especially after entering the drug business, and he kept getting worse as the story progressed. But he never completely lost his humanity, and we saw enough good in him to understand why people still cared about him despite everything he did.
Here are some of the reasons people continued to root for Walt
- He initially got into the drug business to provide for his family and secure their financial future after learning he had cancer.
- He helped cover Hank's treatment costs after the accident, making sure his brotheinlaw received the medical care he needed.
- He saved Jesse's life by killing Gus's dealers after they used Tomas to kill Combo. Walt knew this would put him directly at odds with Gus and potentially danger his life , but he still intervened to protect Jesse.
- He was a loving father and, at least in many ways, a loving husband, despite the darkness of his criminal activities outside the family.
- He continued to love and support Skyler even after her infidelity with Ted and her decision to give their money to Beneke. He was hurt and angry, but he didn't stop caring about her.
- He bought Walter Jr. his dream cars because he wanted to make his son happy. He wanted the best life for the family.
- When the Nazis threatened Hank, Walt offered them virtually all his money in exchange for Hank's life. He was willing to sacrifice the fortune he had spent years building to save a man who was actively trying to put him behind bars
- He tried to keep his family financially secure, even after everything fell apart. In the finale, he arranged for Gretchen and Elliott to pass his remaining money to Walter Jr. through a charitable contribution, knowing his son would otherwise refuse it.
- He eventually stopped pretending that everything he did was purely for his family. When he spoke to Skyler in the finale, he admitted that he had done it for himself because he enjoyed it and felt alive. I respect that
- He gave Skyler the information she needed to negotiate with the authorities by revealing the location of Hank and Gomez's bodies, even though it meant acknowledging the consequences of his actions.
- He returned to Albuquerque knowing he was dying and that the police were closing in on him. He could have simply disappeared and spent his remaining time hiding, but he chose to settle unfinished business.
- He went after the Nazis, avenged Hank, and destroyed the gang that had taken over his operation.
- He freed Jesse from enslavement at the Nazi compound. Despite Jesse betraying him, cooperating with Hank, and helping bring about his downfall, Walt still chose to save him.
- He ultimately allowed Jesse to leave rather than killing him. After everything they had done to each other, Walt gave Jesse the opportunity to walk away and start a new life
None of this erases the terrible things Walt did or excuses the lives he destroyed But pretending Walt never did anything good is just as dishonest as pretending he was a good man throughout the entire series. He was a deeply flawed character who became increasingly monstrous, yet still had moments of genuine love, loyalty and humanity.
