Question What’s wrong with this chicken?

It’s a wild chicken that I found lying near the road alone at night (already suspicious). It falls over every time it tries to walk.

I’m worried it’s a contagious illness in the neighbourhood because as I was taking it home I literally saw another chicken fall out of a tree. Will have to go and check on that one later.

I’ve had chickens for years now and I’ve never seen one do this. He started doing this as a baby chick & we always thought he probably won’t last very long. He’s 4 now. My parents were watching our animals when my husband & I went away recently & he called me upset because he thought he was dying 😆
Also being a vet tech and working with chickens I’ve always been told they can’t breathe on their backs 🤷‍♀️

Question Water belly advice?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Charlotte (the white hen) has been sick for a few weeks. She stopped eating, dropped a ton of weight. I took her to the vet, got her fluids, got her eating again. A couple weeks later her belly swelled up, I took her to the vet and they drained a ton of fluid. A few days after that she is still weak but otherwise eating and acting normal. Is there anything I can do to prolong her life? Vet thinks it is egg yolk perotonitis or similar and acted like she's done for but I'm not so sure.

Question Tips for raising lone chicken?

Post image
9 Upvotes

(stock picture for privacy reasons but the one I'm talking about looks about the same)

Context: I'm trying to get more, and she's my parents' chicken. i just need help on what to do meanwhile

I know chicks shouldn't be raised alone because they're social animals, but my parents decided to keep this single chick as a pet. I don't even know where they got it from!

I live in a pretty unreachable area, but I still tried to get in contact with a farmer to try to get more chicks. The bad thing is, I will probably be waiting a few more weeks until his chicks are old enough to survive the trip all the way here.

I've already raised this one on my own for four weeks before being able to get in contact with the farmer, and I'm afraid she might get lonely. There's still the possibility that the farmer ends up not hatching enough chicks and that I would have to wait even more to get her some siblings. Buying more online is out of the question, as I said I live in a pretty unreachable area & I don't have any money.

So far what I've done is just playing with her a lot. She sleeps in my bed to not get too cold (I know it's dangerous, but my bed is pretty big and I don't move a lot, I'm a very light sleeper)

I've been also letting her run around in my room instead of outside, and she sits on my lap for pets very often. I've considered getting it a mirror, but I'm afraid it might damage her social skills even more, or that it could be bad for her like with parrots.

This is my first time raising chickens, or any birds for that matter, so any tips on anything would be very appreciated.

Question My hen secretly hatched an egg. What do I do? How do I take care of it?

I noticed she was broody. I've been taking her out of the nest box every day but she's also from Puerto Rico and hates cold so I figured maybe she was just trying to stay warm. I never saw an egg under her when I moved her. I guess it was buried in the pine shavings? Anyways it hatched. Now I've hatched eggs in an incubator and used a brooder before, but if I want to let her raise it, what do I need to do? Do I need to get a different food? Different feeder and waterer that it can reach? If I put one on the ground for it, how do I get the others to keep it clean? Will mom show it where to eat/drink or do I need to take it out? There's only 1 so I don't want to put it in a brooder by itself.

Got tired of the muddy run after the rain and wet poop getting trudged into the dirt so after letting it dry in the sun for a few days I cleaned everything up and covered the run in pine shavings.

When I put the chickens back in the run they FREAKED TF OUT bouncing from wall to wall trying to escape lmao. Granted, they have been in the dirt run for the past 5 weeks but they spent the first two months of their lives in a big doggy crate with the same shavings! Here they are acting like this is the first time they’ve seen pine shavings in their entire life! Silly butts!

I was too slow to grab my phone so I missed most of the chaos. 2nd pic you can see one of them frantically trying to fit on top of the feeder. Last pic the tiniest little girl was the only one brave enough to step onto the shavings.

Question Morbid/dark humor help

Need help!!!

We have a "suicidal chicken"! Lol She grew up with a turkey, George, then was moved to another pen (for her damn safety, mind you) . They still can see each other at any and all times, but she's taken not being able to cuddle much worse than even some humans ...her pen has to be checked multiple times a day bc her dumbass likes to get herself stuck in the most ridiculous of ways and places! Well, now she has injured a wing so she got a nice little vacation into the house in a crate.

We can't just call her "Suicidal Chicken" all the time (we can but that's kinda rude, might hurt her feelings if she hears us) so we need help naming her. Please make it appropriate to her actions yet clever enough she won't quite understand the meaning behind it (in case she ever hears us talking about her).

Thank you for your kind concern! 😁 We look forward to hearing some wonderfully ridiculous names 🤣🤣🤣

Media A shared online meadow where you can add a chicken named after your own hens

• Upvotes

https://chickenlink.org I built a website where every page is a chicken on a shared meadow.

Visitors can walk around the meadow and open any chicken to see its name, a short description, a photo and a few links.

Some of you might enjoy adding your own hens. You type a name, the chicken appears on the meadow, and you can add a photo of the real hen and a short line about her. It is free for the first year and no payment details are needed. Nothing renews automatically.

It also works as a simple page for small poultry businesses, egg sellers or breeders who want one link to share on social media.

Feedback is welcome, especially from anyone who keeps chickens and has ideas on what would make it more useful.

Question Advice on rehoming roosters?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello friends!

My husband bought 6 chicks about 4 months ago. 3 ended up being roosters (one of them we think became a rooster?). Recently our 2 Brahmas boys started fighting our silky rooster, so we moved them to the garage hutch temporarily. They're sweet but very loud and we don't have room outdoors for another hutch. We've been trying to rehome them without much luck. My husband took them to the flea market a couple of times, and I'm trying to figure out how to get in touch with the fair that has show chickens on the off chance they'd be interested. It's our first time owning chickens so don't believe we handled this the best but are hoping to find a good home for them somehow!

Question Wears behavior with young chicken

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Advice needed!

One of our Faverolles hens has started behaving strangely, as you can see in the video. She is Young. Just started laying.

At first, I thought it might be wry neck, but most of the time she walks around and holds her head perfectly normally. It almost looks as though she's experiencing some intense irritation, itching, or pain and is desperately trying to reach whatever is bothering her.

We've thoroughly checked her for wounds, skin irritation, mites, lice, or anything else that might be causing discomfort, but haven't found anything. Her crop feels normal, she's eating and drinking, and she spent the whole day outside with the rest of the flock.

Her comb looks a little redder than usual, and she has a tiny wound next to one eye, but otherwise we haven't noticed anything unusual.

Has anyone seen this kind of behaviour before? Are there any illnesses or conditions that could cause these symptoms? I'd really appreciate suggestions for anything else we should examine, check for, or rule out. I'm particularly interested in whether this looks neurological or more like a reaction to pain or irritation.

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!
