Help post Oriental Shorthair FAQ and shelters/breeders

With the growing abundance of ‘What breeders are near me?’, ‘What should I know before owning an OSH?’ and other various questions, I decided it would be best to create an FAQ so we can keep this sub filled with more photos than text posts.

Now, as I am not an owner myself, I ask the community; please leave your questions, comments, tips and other information in the comments to this post, and the community should be able to fill you in for what this post may not. If some of my information is wrong, please do not hesitate to alert me so that it may be corrected.

—— General Information & FAQ ——————

  • What is an OSH?

OSH, short for Oriental Shorthair, is the breed of cat with the obvious traits of having a longer face and snout, bigger ears, a slender physique, almond-shaped eyes and etc. They are a Siamese hybrid, created first in England in the 1900’s. As the name suggests, their hair is short but also sleek, as well.

  • I heard this breed is something akin to a dog. Is this true?

Somewhat, yes. The OSH is a sociable breed, they thrive best in a home with other cats/dogs/etc. to play with and keep them company, which is why they are best adopted in pairs. Often, an OSH kitten will grow to be very playful and keep this trait well into adulthood. They are very affectionate, as well; and while sometimes your OSH may seem to not be so loving at times, they need their alone time too, however they can almost always enjoy a good snuggle. Not to mention, they can be vocal at times, and they do love to use their voice.

  • What’s their temperament like?

They have a high activity level, so unlike something like a Persian or Ragdoll, they may always be looking for trouble. You can counter this by keeping them occupied and busy, if you don’t have another pet to keep them company, so make sure to make time for them. If ignored, they can become quite cranky and sensitive, so be sure to avoid this to keep you and your cat happy. However they are very excitable and usually will be interested in whatever it is you’re doing, even if its something as mundane as getting the mail. They are generally very sweet and affectionate so look forward to this.

  • I’m afraid I might not be a good match for this cat, what should I avoid, or what can I do to improve?

These cats do not like to be ignored or left alone for too long. If you have a job with lots of hours and your home will be empty for most of the day/night besides your cat(s), consider searching for a trustworthy petsitter who can watch and entertain your little friend(s) while you’re gone. If that’s not an option for you, you may have to adjust your schedule, or look for a less demanding job. As the breed may act like a dog, it is still a cat and they aren’t very high maintenance, save for the copious amounts of love and attention you’ll be handing out. As long as you bond with them often, the breed should be fine for you! As for general improvements and things to avoid, that may change depending on your situation, so feel free to ask in the comments if you need further help.

  • I’m only allowed one pet. What should I do?

Personally, I suggest considering another breed or even another animal who might do better living with just you if you can’t get them another animal to hang out with, but if you really are bent on getting an OSH, the most you can do is keep it busy with toys, good food/treats and lots and lots of attention and love. Make sure to consider your friend in everything you do!

  • My OSH does not get along with my other pets. What can I do?

If your OSH isn’t getting along with another pet, try to narrow down the source of the issue. Could it be under-socialization? This is the most common reason, and it means the cat hasn’t had enough good experiences with the aforementioned species to willingly get along with them. Before you decide, though, consider these few fixes before confirming the issue: - Keep them happy and occupied. This may seem obvious, but sometimes all they need is a little playtime and some pets. Try to figure out what they want or need and keep them feeling satisfied, so they don’t lash out on anyone or anything. - Neuter/Spay them. The cat should always be neutered/spayed; sometimes a female cat who’s in heat may get very aggressive, or a male cat who’s still intact are generally known to be aggressive anyway. Not to mention, it will keep out the risk of having new kittens. - Check your cat for anything that might be causing them pain. Constant pain would make you angry, right? It’ll make your little fellow angry, too. Look for something like bugs (fleas/ticks/earmites etc.), bald spots, sores or odd behavior to determine. If you have suspicions, be sure to take them to the vet for a checkup to make sure they are in top condition and mention everything to them. - Try a scent that may calm them, or play nice music for them in the background. This should help either pet, whichever one is the issue. If your pet is naturally aggressive, try using something that may make them feel at ease and to soothe them. It may make them feel happier and they’ll reflect this on how they act around other pets. If the issue is something else, try asking your vet or r/CATHELP to get possible answers for your questions. The comments here are also a good place to ask; we will try to help you find an answer.

  • My question isn’t listed.

Please leave them in the comments! We will try to help you the best we can.

——— Shelters —————————

If you can manage to find a siamese or OSH (be it mix or pure) at a shelter, that’s great! But if the ones you are looking for don an elongated snout and larger ears, you may have some trouble finding one just anywhere. Before you search for a breeder, give a couple of these sites a search before that to see if there’s already one out there who needs a home.

If you have information, recommendations or other input about any breeders or adoption websites, that would be very helpful as well. Please let me know if any breeders or specific shelters should be added or removed from the lists. They’ll then be reviewed and the action will be performed if required.

Gomez, Schrodie, and Boris The Fluff Bucket

Post image
23 Upvotes

This morning we have Shrödinger and Gomez cuddling with Boris The Fluff Bucket.

You may have seen me mention that Boris and Gomez are buddies and partners in crime. Boris isn't especially athletic and specializes in cupboards, etc. at or below waist level... unless he senses Gomez has found some contraband that's hop-worthy, and then he'll hop up to share the loot. He looooves to chew into bags.

Like that bag of dry pinto beans in the cupboard (before we secured it): pinto beans all over the kitchen floor. Or, inexplicably, brown paper shopping bags reduced to confetti. I really don't mind.

Shrödinger isn't a troublemaker at all. But he has anxiety disorder, which was causing him to pee in various places, especially at night when the cats are left on their own in the front of the house so we can sleep. Occasionally I used to hear conflict out there.

Now he's getting Prozac (the vet said this was the best treatment for peeing like that) and he sleeps in the bedroom with us. No more peeing, and I no longer hear any disagreements.

OSH mom Earliest known photo of Gomez, and

Picture is is the first photo we got of Gomez. It was love at first sight.

Of course, after that she got ringworm, as I've explained here, and a distended belly. When we actually met her she looked awful (picture 2)

The breeder treated the ringworm and the belly resolved on its own. We got her home, everybody else got ringworm from spores that didn't show up on testing, while Gomez remained sleek and glamorous. The ringworm was inconvenient but not painful or itchy. Easy to get rid of.

Then one morning she was dragging her back legs. She was partially paralyzed by dry FIP affecting the spine, usually fatal. But the treatment worked. She chewed off the fur on her legs during this ordeal but made a full recovery.

The other day we decided she might make a cute bat for Halloween (picture 3). I always thought people who dressed up their pets were insulting the dignity of the animal. Now I AM one.

This OSH breeder, Ultravires, is in California. He has a list of US and international OSH breeders. Go to his Facebook page:

I've been messaging with him for a while now and he's got integrity as well as a very entertaining FB page.

Cuteness overload: Gomez and Shrödinger

At 4:00 AM, somebody was using me as a trampoline. I knew who it was. I yelled, they stopped.

My husband got up at 5:30 (like he always does) and fed everybody.

Woke up at 6:30 (I'm an early riser, but not as bad as him!) to this: the culprits, Gomez and Schrodie, snuggled in a post-breakfast stupor.

So he’s Bruno, and we’re kind of in a pickle, I need opinions

UPDATE He’s 7 yrs old, we adopted him about a month ago, and we got him with this kind of food: cats fine food pure mono proteic with chicken wet food, Marley and Dan salmon sterilised dry food. So, the situation is, we think he doesn’t like the dry food, but we’re not sure, cause he’s vomiting them back every time, I know they have a sensible stomach, has anyone ever experienced it? Need to mention, we have another cat, a European, got her from a tree when she was ab 4 months old, and she stayed exclusively inside, she’s ab 2 yrs, she’s eating the same food as him, but she fine, she doesn’t vomit at all. Thank you, I’m waiting for ur answers!
P.S. they’re dewormed inside and outside, both of them, vaccinated up to date.

*\*
We received a message from the old owners, and apparently he’s allergic to corn, and the food we were told to give him, has corn as an ingredient.

“He eats 3 meals/day, at 6am, 3pm and 10pm (RO time). All meals are wet food and he gets few bits of kibble mixed in (max 6). Unfortunately right now he is a compulsive eater, so having dry food available to graze on is not an option.
Concerning food, he has cereal allergy (corn is main offender), but rice is safe for him. He loves chicken as protein, and rejects beef and fish (salmon he may accept). He has rejected food (both dry and wet) from Applaws, Royal Canin, Hill's, Purina, Purizon, Canagan, Bozita, Carnilove, Brit Care, Greenwoods, Sanabelle, Crave, Feringa, MAC's, N&D, Porta 21, Petkult, Lily's Kitchen, Wellness Core. From GranataPet, Wild Freedom and catz finefood he’s accepted some of their wet food.”, this is what we were told.

We think this is why, and it would make the most sense, I have to note: when we adopted him we weren’t told about his allergies, we knew he was medically safe and has no disease, as the vet told us this too. We pushed to find out what happened, and we received this message.

Advice Picky Eater Kitten

Post image
85 Upvotes

Hello! I picked up my OSH kitten muncie from LA about a week ago. I drove her back to my home (8 1/2 hours away). She's amazing and everything I've ever hoped for. My only worry is, she isn't eating enough! I have nutri-cal gel and I've been trying squirt little bits with a blunt syringe in her cheek pocket (which has been extremely hard to keep her head still enough to where she won't whip around her head, even with 2 people). I have also tried using KRM in her food mixed in, she barely eats it. I am wondering if anyone has other ideas on hie to get her to eat, or how to administer the nutrical so she'll eat. Thank you!!!!

Gomez again: tasting the milk. Eeek

Post image
28 Upvotes

Gomez hopped up on the kitchen counter this morning to taste the milk I was going to use to make my cappucino. Just to make sure it wasn't sour, of course.

Eeeeeek

She has been removed, and the counter has been wiped down with Clorox cleanser. Twice. RN Hygiene Standards are strictly enforced in the kitchen.

None of the other three have ever hopped onto the counter. They are lying around in a post-breakfast stupor. But everybody knows the sounds of the morning cappucino ritual. Unfortunately, now that she knows milk in involved, she will definitely keep trying, because that's our Gomez.

When I picked her up to take her off the counter, she rubbed her little nose on my face. Not just a boop, a mom cat-baby cat rub. I'm experiencing Cuteness Overload.
