politics Early voting starts Thursday October 15th and goes until October 31st. FINAL chance to register to vote if you haven't done so.
If you have not yet registered to vote yet, early voting in NC is your final chance to do so. Early voting is from October 15th to October 31st. As of right now NC only allows you to register if you early vote at the same time. The deadline to register and vote on election day has passed.
This website is where you can check your voter information, sample ballot, and if your mail-in ballot was accepted:
In NC you must have a photo ID to vote, but if you don't you can fill out an exemption form and cast a provisional ballot. You can see the details here:
https://www.ncsbe.gov/voting/voter-id
Here is where you can find early voting sites in NC for your specific county:
During early voting you can vote anywhere in your county. This differs from election day voting where you must vote at your assigned voting place.

Disturbing Content Jonathan D. Miller, Libertarian candidate for NC Senate (District 16), has been live tweeting his standoff with police in Cary.
At approx. 9:30 this morning, Jonathan D. Miller, the Libertarian candidate for District 16's NC Senate seat, sent out a tweet stating:
The whole police department is chasing me with guns drawn. This should be fun.
Since then, he has been sporadically posting about having six shots and the high ground. The last post was about 45 minutes ago, as of my writing this, stating
I fucked up and talked to the negotiator on the phone long enough for them to box me in. They have dogs so I'm probably done for.
I've not seen anything on the news about this yet, but the standoff is apparently happening in Cary near the Whole Foods according to a post in r/raleigh (link) so keep an eye out if you live out that way.
EDIT 4:30 PM: As of a few minutes ago, WRAL is reporting that Miller is in custody following a multi-hour standoff in Cary's Lochmere neighborhood. Link

politics Last week of early voting
Remember to vote the entire ballot. A couple of cycles ago Cheri Beasley lost by 401 votes statewide. Some 2000 voters in Durham County didn't vote the entire ballot.
Also: hopefully only one more week of those blasted texts and emails from politicians from across the nation pleading for money.

politics Get out and vote!
Make sure yall get out and vote! Do the research, learn about what each individual wants to do for you and others! You can’t help make changes when you sit around and don’t get out and vote!

Main takeaway: vote early in person if you can! There’s no grace period this year if your ballot is delivered after Election Day.

I love it here
I have been in North Carolina for the past five years. I love it here for some reason people were telling me that I shouldn’t move here, but I completely disagree with them. I don’t ever wanna move.

politics Hey NC - Friendly reminder that Early Voting ends at 3pm on Saturday, Oct. 31. Get out there and VOTE EARLY to skip the lines on election day. Remember, you CAN still register to vote at early voting sites, but not on election day for most cases. Also, curbside voting is available if you need.

Not a mountain lion My kid just called me out on how I pronounce “water”
I grew up in the Sandhills (Rob Co) and I say “wuhter”. My husband grew up in the high country and says “wahter”. Same with “miwk”, “ohl”, “fahr/tahr”, “aise” …you get it maybe.
I KNOW the actual pronunciations most use but 20 years removed from home I can’t break the habit. If I’m talking to someone I am not comfortable with I speak slower and over pronounce those words the “correct” way but I never considered that my own family would say something. They’ve had teachers call crayons “crowns” ffs it was a whole thing.
Do yall think people are dumb for shit like this or am I overthinking every interaction I’ve had the past couple decades?

discussion Remove Generative AI from Wake County Student Devices
WCPSS has fully embraced generative AI for students ages 13+ with no existing AI policy or established best practices for teachers and staff. This irresponsible approach to a rapidly changing technology not only undermines students' developing critical thinking abilities, but exposes them to potential privacy violations and inappropriate content.

discussion Hit-and-Run
Hi everyone! I was involved in a hit-and-run this morning, October 26, around 6:50 AM on I-40 West, approximately half a mile before Exit 211 (Gallimore Dairy Road). Greensboro, NC
I was driving a red Honda CR-V when a black sedan changed lanes into my vehicle, striking my driver’s-side rear passenger door. The driver left without stopping.
I’m hoping someone commuting westbound toward Greensboro around 6:40–7:00 AM might have captured the incident or the black sedan on their dashcam.
I’ve filed a police report. If you witnessed anything or have footage, please send me a private message.
Thank you so much!

"former" nc resident qualifying for in-state tuition for grad school?
Hi! I'm applying to MSW graduate programs across the state for fall 2027 entry and would love to hear any insight folks may have on being granted in-state residency status.
I was born in and have lived in NC all of my life, my NC-based parents claimed me as a dependent this year, I will be 24 by the time Fall 2027 semester starts, my license and voter registration are all still set to NC, but i currently live and work in Brooklyn NY and have been here since last October. I won't be able to move back home until my lease is up next summer.
It was always my intent to be here temporarily for career reasons but I am just worried it will totally ruin my chances for fall 2027, since I know NC is understandably rather strict about your physical presence in NC for a year before qualifying. I imagine if I submit I will get flagged as a no and will appeal my decision as I know you can, but just wanted to ask if anyone else has had experience with this!
P.S. Since I also didn't change my license or voter registration to NY when I moved here, I don't qualify for in-state tuition in NY either if that helps anyone in a similar boat lol.
