Nurses, have you ever had a patient who had absolutely nobody to pick them up after a hospital stay?

I recently learned that some patients recovering from anesthesia need someone to accompany them home, but not everyone has a friend or family member available.

It got me wondering what happens in these situations.

For nurses or anyone who works in healthcare, have you ever experienced this firsthand? What usually happens when a patient is ready to leave the hospital but has nobody to come for them?

I'd be interested to hear your experiences. And if you've ever been in a situation where you had to face something difficult without anyone to rely on, how did you handle it?

Just Chatting 4 years ago, I buckled my seat belt on autopilot. It’s the reason I’m alive.

4 years ago I was in a really bad accident. I got brain damage, broke my knee, and tore a bunch of muscles around it.

I don’t remember any of it. The last thing I remember is being in a convenience store to buy a charger, and the next thing I knew I was in the hospital after surgery. I hadn’t slept in about a week and I was in a psychosis at the time, so my head was not in a good place.

Somewhere between leaving that store and the crash, I put my seatbelt on. I hit a hydro pole so hard it snapped in half. The doctors and everyone else told me I would’ve died if I hadn’t been wearing it.

What gets me is that my mind wasn’t working. I wasn’t thinking about anything. So how did I put on a seatbelt?

I think it’s because I always wore one. Every single time, for years. It got to the point where I didn’t have to think about it, my body just did it.

So yeah, doing something over and over really does become second nature, and sometimes that’s what saves you.

Music Does anyone else feel like having instant access to every movie, song, and game somehow made them less exciting?

Don't get me wrong, streaming and digital downloads are super convenient. But I was just thinking about how much I miss the actual anticipation of things.

Like walking around a video store on a Friday night trying to pick a movie, reading the back of a game manual on the car ride home before you could even play it, or waiting a whole week for a new episode of a show that everyone was watching at the exact same time.

Now we have infinite choices right in our pockets, yet we spend 45 minutes scrolling through menus just to give up and rewatch the same comfort show for the 10th time. Everything is instant, so nothing feels like an "event" anymore.

What is one small ritual from the pre-streaming era (like burning CDs, midnight releases, or renting movies) that you miss the most?

It got me thinking about how special unexpected gifts can be. I've always loved the idea of surprising someone with something meaningful, like a beautiful watch.

What's the most thoughtful gift you've ever given or received

Life Stories I've planned a whole Halloween party for my friends and I'm so excited for it

It's got a four round quiz with animations and silly fonts, pass the parcel and other party games. I've got tacky decorations to put up and a costume theme. I even got party bags with bubbles and sweets and glowsticks in.

Its next Sunday but I can't stop thinking about how much I'm looking forward to it. Parties with my friends are normally just get together and chat, maybe in costumes, which is nice but I love doing big events like this and I've had such a good time planning it.

I can't talk to any of my friends about it because I don't want to give away too many details, so I thought I'd tell strangers on reddit about it instead

Questions do you solo dine at restaurants?

I’ve been craving this chocolate lava cake from a restaurant i’ve never been to alone. been there with family and friends but not by myself. i know they have seats for one person but the concept of solo dining kinda makes me self conscious ? Is it considered weird/inappropriate. I really am craving that lava cake and i’ve got tomorrow off from work…

I have been trying to ease myself into going out solo. I once solo dined at a breakfast restaurant and it felt really nice. I guess I just never see many people solo dine at restaurants and i wonder if it’s weird to do so.

Just Chatting confessions.

Hi, I'm new here.

I'm just a very ordinary person with some not-so-ordinary stories to tell. Or maybe they're ordinary too, just the kind of stories people don't usually talk about.

I've got things to confess, things I've kept to myself, and stories I've never really had the courage to share.

I'm alone with my thoughts a lot, and I thought maybe I'd start putting them somewhere. One confession at a time.

I don't know if anyone will read this, or if anyone will care. But I guess it feels good to finally start somewhere.

So, here I am.

Just Chatting the way i sort my t-shirts makes no sense to anyone else

every drawer in my dresser has its own weird system. plain tees stay folded flat in the bottom one, but the moment one has any kind of graphic it moves to the middle drawer and gets stacked sideways like a row of books. socks share that drawer too, though only the ankle ones, rolled into little balls. the top drawer is for the shirts i actually wear most, even if they all look almost identical. it sounds simple until i need to find something and realize i memorized a map that no one else can read. still, it keeps everything off the floor and that counts as success.

Life Stories That weird bond you develop with an old machine when you’re the only person alive who knows its specific quirks

• Upvotes

There’s a strange intimacy in owning an older laptop, car, or piece of hardware where it only works if you turn the key at a 45-degree angle or tap the chassis once to stop the fan buzzing. Anyone else using it thinks it's broken beyond repair, but to you, it’s just communicating. At what point does mechanical troubleshooting turn into actual affection for an inanimate object?

Questions When you comment to a written post, do you read and make sure you try to understand it before you comment?

I have been years on reddit and have made a lot of posts asking for recommendations. Books, movies, games and so on. Mostly books though.

And I notice that an alarming number of replies do not read the post they comment to. Often they dont even read the title. Sometimes its even as high as 30 to 50 percent of the replies that do this.

As an example I recently I asked for book suggestions and I asked for long series that consist of books that are also long. So many people recommended to me books from long series, but omitted the second part of the title. That the books themselves need to be long too.

Its like if there are multiple requirements to the question, many people only read and remember one of them.

Thoughts & Ideas I have a lot to talk about everythingggg

It's actually funny how we live in a world where you can argue with a complete stranger on the internet for 45 minutes but can't reply to your friend's "what's up?" for three business days.

Like, I'll spend an hour reading a debate between two people about whether pineapple belongs on pizza, get emotionally invested, pick a side, and mentally prepare my counterarguments.

But when someone asks me what I did today, suddenly my entire personality disappears.

"Nothing much."

BRO, I HAVE THOUGHTS. I HAVE OPINIONS. I HAVE A 17-PAGE MENTAL DOCUMENT ABOUT WHY PEOPLE WHO WALK SLOWLY IN MALLS SHOULD BE STUDIED.

I just need the right conversation to bring it out of me. 😭

And honestly, sometimes random conversations with people you don't even know are more fun than talking to people you've known for years.

No awkward history, no expectations, just two strangers having the most unnecessary but entertaining conversation of their lives.

Why don't we do that more often?

Also, what's the most random conversation you've ever had with a stranger that somehow lasted way longer than expected?

Just Chatting Why is “Drink the Kool Aid” so casually used in American culture?

• Upvotes

Watching Monday Night Football on ESPN right now and one of the pre-game hosts used “drinking the kool aid” to describe a team. IMO I think it’s a great expression when used correctly, but this is not the first time I’ve heard it used on a national broadcast, and I guess I’m just confused why American media has decided that an expression based on a mass murder-suicide can be thrown around in front of any audience without triggering any censorship rules

Thoughts & Ideas Sleeping children are gasses

Speaking as the father of a three year old, I can only logically conclude that children share at least one property of gasses. They expand to occupy the space allowed. My daughter can sleep peacefully in her own toddler bed and yet, somehow, expand to the point that I have 5 inches of bed with my wife pressed against my back. EVIL SUPERPOWER!

Life Stories It dawned on me that I essentially trained myself from a young age to fall asleep to video game let's play livestreams.

I was talking with some friends about what they listen to when they go to sleep and got some of the usual answers: white noise, a fan, true crime, etc. I mentioned I listen to people playing video games pretty often and got a few weird looks but didn't really think much of it. I don't listen to streamers who make their content solely around making as much noise as possible.

Thinking about it now though, I realized that prior to Youtube Let's Plays, Twitch Live Streams, etc, I would fall asleep listening to my older brother playing video games pretty often. I remember being around 6-10 years old, this happening on and off throughout those years. The majority of the active game consoles were in my bedroom and my mom didn't care if he played as long as I went to sleep. This was top for me bc I loved my older brother and hanging out with him!

I remember falling asleep to the revving engines of modified geometric cars in Need for Speed Underground 2 along with its soundtrack (I still have some songs in my playlist today), I remember listening to him playing Tomb Raider and hearing the various animals growling, yowling, roaring, and the occasional "dang it" coming from under his breath when he died. I remember hearing the cartoonish sound effects and fantastical noises of the Mario and Zelda games, and all the music.

It was a good set of memories to relive.

Thoughts & Ideas Jack Skellington is canonically from Kentucky, or at least died there.

• Upvotes

Jack Skellington is the protagonist from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, an immortal skeleton and the "patron spirit of Halloween" (according to several wikis). Skeletons are decomposed human cadavers. While in many fantasy, fiction, and folklore stories, creatures of any kind can be extant on their own accord, or even magically conjured into existence, skeletons, like ghosts, are virtually always implied to be tied to prior living humans (or the corresponding animal type that matches their skeletal structure or ghostly ethereal spirit).

Jack's purpose in Halloween Town is to oversee Halloween: to scare people on that holiday in good fun. Like other mythical creatures, he isn't going to be personally known in any real place on Earth. Even if he personally goes out to scare people, it's unlikely he would gain renown that way; he isn't haunting a location, he's doing scares (i.e. "jumpscares") to observe a specific holiday.

So what does all this mean?

Jack tells us in Jack's Lament that "to a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky, and I'm known throughout England and France."

This is a peek into Jack's human existence. Jack's Lament is a deeply personal song which gives the audience insight into Jack's persona, mood, prowess as a frightening spirit, but also his personality, his preferences, his vulnerabilities.

And so he's literally sharing with the audience an insight into where he died. "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr Unlucky–" why would a skeleton be "Mr. Unlucky?" The most obvious answer would be because it died. Jack Skellington died in Kentucky; or, if you would like to be very specific, the human who died and transformed into Jack died in Kentucky.

Now you might say "well he could have just been traveling through or visiting Kentucky when he died." And that's true. But Kentucky is not an especially populous state nor does it have any major ports, being landlocked. And so if Jack was indeed "known throughout England and France" is it more likely he was a relatively successful famous socialite or celebrity from Kentucky who frequently visited western Europe, or a famous person from somewhere else who was visiting Kentucky and encounted some ill fate?

Kentucky being home to lots of Scots-Irish settlers and having limestone caverns, indigenous sites, and Appalachian mountains with coal deposits means Kentucky has a fairly rich amount of folklore. And much of that Scots-Irish folklore includes the precursor to modern Halloween: Samhain. And what better character to join that folklore than the patron spirit of Halloween himself, Jack Skellington?

Edit: So another angle about the narrative significance of the line "to a guy in Kentucky I'm Mr Unlucky" in the context of Jack's Lament:

The song has a pattern of building up Jack's victories and strengths and confident claims about who he is, then contrasting it with his own self-doubt, restlessness, and existential boredom.

"With the wave of my hand, and a well-placed moan I have swept the very bravest off their feet. But year after year, It's the same routine And I grow so weary of the sound of screams And I Jack, the Pumpkin King Have grown so tired of the same old thing

This structure repeats throughout the song. These are build-up statements about Jack's identity. And Jack's origins with his death and a brief mention of his prior human life fits within that broader theme. It's Jack, once again on-theme with the song, proclaiming who he is, and where he's been, only to go back to the chorus with his doubts and laments.

Just Chatting How well do you know your neighbors, and what is your relationship with them?

• Upvotes

I used to know my neighbors really well, they have since moved away and now I don't know anyone on either side of me. I never see them outside like my previous neighbor, so it is hard to even get a conversation going.

It had me thinking and I wanted to ask reddit what their situation is like.
