Just Chatting that faint hum you only notice when everything else stops

• Upvotes

i was reading on the couch last night with the tv off and no music playing when this low constant buzz started to stand out. at first i thought it was just in my head, but it stayed there even after i held my breath. it turned out to be the fridge compressor plus the little power brick under the table, both doing their quiet thing at the same time. once i heard it i couldn't un-hear it, so i walked around unplugging random chargers until the room felt actually quiet again. now i'm wondering how many nights that layer was running underneath everything else without me ever catching it.

Just Chatting do you often feel obligated to help others or make a small difference, even when it takes a lot out of you?

• Upvotes

someone i know was feeling really lonely and i really empathized with that swallowing feeling. i invited her out to play tennis with my friends and taught her how to play, this was really stressful for me to plan cause we're not super close friends tbh but i felt really obligated to?? like i was putting it off for weeks because it stressed me out lol

and then i didn't even get a thank you so now i'm feeling some type of way

Do people in the US actually hesitate to call an ambulance because of the cost?

• Upvotes

I'm from outside the US, and I've heard stories about how expensive ambulance rides can be there.

It got me wondering: if someone suddenly became seriously ill or got injured, would the fear of receiving a huge medical bill make some people hesitate before calling an ambulance?

For Americans here, is this something people genuinely worry about, or is it less common than it sounds online?

I'm genuinely curious about what it's like in real life.

Do you ever miss a moment while you're still living it?

• Upvotes

Sometimes I'm doing something ordinary, and suddenly I think, one day, I'll probably miss this exact moment. Even if there's nothing special happening right now, it might become a memory I'll wish I could revisit someday.

It's a strange feeling, realizing that some ordinary days might actually be the ones we remember the most.

Does anyone else ever feel this way?

What type of style do you think of when you hear someone has a deliberate style or aesthetic?

Im a little confused on what comes to mind when someone is talking about a deliberate aesthetic. I've heard its any style that is well put together but i always assumed it was a more subtle, orderly, neat look.

Music It's weird how a song can take you back to a version of yourself you haven't thought about in years

I heard an old song recently and suddenly remembered little details about a time in my life I'd almost forgotten. It's strange how music can bring back not just memories, but the feeling of being that person again. Has a song ever done that to you?

Food & Drinks I finally tried Five Guys. Why do so many people enjoy soggy buns?

Yes I can taste the ingredients are great and fresh, the fries are nice too, but the bun!! Wrapped in that alluminium foil, trapped by its own steam making everything inside SO SOGGY?

It wasnt even a takeout, I ate it right there. The bun is already wet and mushy by the time I took it from the counter to my table.

Im so confused why there are so much praises about it online. The texture is horrible.

(For a similar price range Ive tried Shake Shack and it is 10 times better.)

Movies & Shows Just watched episode 1 of The Whitest Kids U Know!

It’s kinda cringe and very of its era, but it’s not completely shit! My favorite sketch was probably the Abe Lincoln one or the slapping one! To all the people here that were alive when it first started airing, what were your thoughts when it first started airing?

What’s the best thing your parents ever did for you?

I’m in the midst of raising 4 teenagers. Teenagers are HARD. I’m doing my best and feeling like a failure daily. I’m wondering what was the 1-2 best thing(s) your parents did for you as a teenager? What skill did they teach you? What did they do that created memories? What did they do that made you feel special or powerful or validated?
What made the biggest impact for you?

Just Chatting What is a new skill that you're currentlylearning?

I am trying to loose weight by being more active but going to a gym feels like a chore. Instead I've been learning how to rollerblade, swim at the beach, and watercolor for fun.

Questions What stops you from getting tested for STIs even when it’s free?

Getting tested can be scary since people might not know how things will go. From the beginning to end, how is everyone’s experiences? Was there anything specific that made someone not want to get tested even when services are free?

Questions What does it feel like in the first few minutes after two people confess their love to each other?

I've always wondered what the first few minutes after a love confession feel like, when two people realise their feelings are mutual.

Does everything suddenly feel different? The silence, the eye contact, the smiles?

And that night, when both lie in bed replaying the same moment in their minds…

For those who have experienced it, what did those first few minutes feel like? ❤️

Ordered a mandoline, anyone got any good uses for it?

I am very much looking forward to hopefully not end up in the ER.

I mostly got it for cucumber salads, creek and Italian salads with shaved carrots, and a few baked potato dishes.

I know people use them for fruit based baking, but not really into sweets like that.

Always been afraid of them and put off buying one, but the one I got.has a pretty good guard to it.

Last weekend I was at my best friends house and his youngest daughter got me into chess again.

I was never into it. I have a semi decent board as I play board games with friends and figured some who loves games should have one.

I've always been into Go, but no one to play with. Got a paid membership on chess.com and have been doing lessons and problems the last few days.

Kinda excited to play his kids with my board, and I think thats where the excitement ends. I still dont really like chess and believe Go is a far better game. But odds are I'll never get to use that fancy board.

Anyone here play chess or Go?

Just Chatting Finally started being active after years of lurking, any tips?

Been lurking for around 2 years without ever posting anything, just scrolling. Finally decided to actually be active and talk to people here. It feels a bit weird to post for the first time but also exciting.

For those who have been here a while, how did you get comfortable posting? And how do you find good conversations? Would love to hear your experience.

Just Chatting I'm in the ward, cheer me up

This isn't meant to be a negative post. I've been going through a lot so it's hard to stay 100% positive. But Reddit is great and I always find positive stuff on here.

I love questions, even about sensitive topics, I'm an open book.. i love Formula 1, paleontology, and the TV show Shadowhunter.

Ask me anything :)

Does anyone else feel like we’re all just winging adulthood?

Can we talk about how nobody really knows what they’re doing in adulthood? 😭
Some people are figuring out money. Some are figuring out relationships. Some are just trying to keep their lives together while pretending they have everything under control.
And somehow, we’re all just expected to know what we’re doing.
