Pete Hegseth Reportedly Angling For Blackburn's Senate Seat To Avoid Impeachment

The defense secretary might try an intriguing escape route, according to Puck.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is “angling” for Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) to appoint him to her Senate seat so he can avoid potential impeachment, Puck reported Sunday.

Blackburn is likely to win her race for Tennessee governor, opening up the post for the rest of her term, which ends in January 2031.

Hegseth and his family set up residence in Tennessee in 2022. Rep. Tim Burchett is also interested in the Senate seat, according to Puck.

The House is expected to vote on an impeachment resolution filed by Republican Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) against Hegseth after the election ― and it is expected to be close. Democrats have been “aligning to call for the defense secretary’s ouster or resignation,” Semafor reported earlier this month.

The progressive advocacy group MoveOn told HuffPost there might more momentum toward impeaching the secretary than President Donald Trump.

“There’s a lot of ways to hold folks accountable. I think impeachment is one of them, and I think just from the perspective of our members at MoveOn, our members don’t want to take any of those options off the table,” spokesperson Joel Payne said.

Massie’s resolution charges Hegseth with waging war against Iran without congressional approval and an imminent threat, and ignoring laws to minimize civilian casualties. He also accuses the Cabinet member of using unauthorized lethal force on suspected drug-smuggling boats.

Some Republicans are hoping Trump could dismiss Hegseth before any impeachment process commences, and some senators “foresee a pathway” for the secretary to step down, Puck’s Leigh Ann Caldwell reported.

The Pentagon pushed back hard at the report.

“These speculations are nothing more than beltway gossip by anonymous sources,” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson wrote to HuffPost on Monday. “Whoever is feeding you these claims are either badly misinformed or deliberately leading you astray to peddle Fake News. Under President Trump’s leadership, Secretary Hegseth’s singular priority is leading the War Department and delivering on the President’s America First agenda.”

The US Army completed Phase II of Operation Dragon Covenant at Fort Bragg, a test of concept for large scale battlefield temporary interment. Standard doctrine calls for five trenches holding 100 casualties. Engineers with D6 dozers cut dig times to about 75 minutes per twenty remains, and the goal was confirming bodies can be preserved, disinterred, identified, and repatriated after hostilities. The Army has not done this at scale since the Korean War, and the senior fatality management NCO admitted they'd otherwise be improvising in a high intensity conflict.

Mass casualty corpse management is peer war doctrine, not counterterrorism posture. Set it beside European stockpiling advisories and the UK Be Ready campaign, and Western institutions are visibly converging on the same threat assessment.

Story\Experience 25 Oct 1983 Operation Urgent Fury

Operation Urgent Fury was a U.S.-led military invasion of the island nation of Grenada that began on October 25, 1983, and ended in early November 1983.

Key Details

Dates: October 25 – November 2, 1983 (combat largely concluded by early November; troops withdrew by December).

Coalition Forces: Around 7,300 to 7,600 U.S. troops (including Army Rangers, the 82nd Airborne Division, Marines, Navy SEALs, and Air Force support) alongside roughly 350 troops from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) / Caribbean Peacekeeping Force.

Opposing Forces: Roughly 1,300 Grenadian People's Revolutionary Army (PRA) personnel and about 784 Cuban construction and military personnel.

Causes: Triggered by a violent internal coup within Grenada's Marxist government, the execution of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, the establishment of a military council led by Hudson Austin, concerns over the safety of roughly 600 American medical students, and the construction of a major airstrip with Cuban/Soviet involvement.

Primary Objectives: Protect and evacuate American citizens/medical students, depose the military council, restore democratic governance, and eliminate Cuban/Soviet influence.

Outcome: The military council was overthrown, Cuban and Soviet personnel were expelled, Governor-General Sir Paul Scoon was rescued, and an interim government paved the way for democratic elections in 1984.

Casualties: U.S. forces suffered 19 to 24 killed and over 100 wounded; Grenadian forces and civilians suffered dozens of casualties, while Cuban forces suffered 24–25 killed and hundreds captured.
