Characters Older than the media they came from

Alastor (Hazbin Hotel)

Alastor the radio demon is easily one of the more well known of the Hazbin Hotel characters, but as any vivziepop nerd will you tell you he predates Hazbin Hotel by a lot, I am not so sure exactly when but since his first appearance was in Zoophobia (2012), it was quite a while ago.

Ralsei (Deltarune)

Many people would assume that Ralsei is an anagram of Asriel, but in fact its the other way around as conceptually Ralsei came first, then Asriel. Despite this it took until chapter 1 of Deltarune for Ralsei to star in (2018) compared to Asriel starring in Undertale (2015)

Characters [Unique trope] Protagonists who don’t have a love interest

Thumbnail
gallery

Whenever it comes to movies and shows, I find most protagonists have that one person they are romantically or sexually interested in. That they will either try to pursue or that person is already involved with them intimately. I find it’s a bit rare you find a lot of lead characters that are single, and that having that significant others isn’t an important part of their story!

Ryland from Project Hail Mary is one example! Even though the movie does explore him sharing scenes with Eva, they don’t have that kind of relationship and it’s also revealed that Ryland doesn’t have a girlfriend or a wife.

Remy in Ratatouille is another! We never get any mention of him having an interest in someone, because his story is more driven on his passion and talent for cooking.

Lore Subtle racism

Thumbnail
gallery
3.8k Upvotes

Edit: Alright, change the title to "Racism as Subtext." I’ve realized that’s a much more appropriate title for the post, but since the title can’t be changed, I’m doing what I can.

Alright, let me explain myself clearly. I’m referring to instances in a story—where different races coexist—in which racism or discrimination against a specific group is portrayed without being explicitly said. This is conveyed through things the characters say, how they interact with one another, and seemingly trivial details about the world.

Chainsmoker Cat: throughout the series—amidst the poop jokes, addictions, and giant dicks—there is clear racism directed toward the "beastfolk." They are subject to numerous stereotypes; for example, many people are surprised that Yani’s sister barely meows. beastfolk cannot pass down surnames to their children; consequently, individuals like Hameko—whose parents are both beastfolk—are born without a surname and must choose one later in life. It is mentioned that, in the past, beastfolk were barred from many professions, such as teaching or practicing law, and were relegated to seasonal labor—a situation not all that different from the present day. To make matters worse, they have been, and continue to be, subjected to intense fetishization. All of this is taking place while the characters live in Nyagamihara—a city built and inhabited primarily by beastfolk—so just imagine what it must be like in cities where the beastfolk are a minority.

Coyote vs. ACME (Spoiler Alert): This might be a bit of a cheat—since it becomes a central plot point in the second half—but from the very beginning, it’s clear that Toons are not held in the same regard as humans. For instance, legal cases involving Toons as victims are dismissed as trivial because they recover from injuries so quickly; meanwhile, a receptionist mistakes Coyote—an expressive, anthropomorphic Toon—for a pet. Even by the end of the film, once the world realizes that Toons do indeed experience pain (despite their rapid recovery), it is still somehow deemed acceptable to use them as test subjects for ACME products.

miscellaneous [Loved trope] Accidently the truth.

Thumbnail

In which a character lies but it turns out it's the truth.

  1. In one Batman comic a mercenary rescues a kid from rubble. The kid asks if Batman sent them and not wanting to dissapoint the kid they lie and say yes. Turns out Bruce Wayne hired them for this rescue work.

  2. Papyrus, skeleton man from Undertale gets word that a dangerous fighter named Undyne is chasing you. You have the option of changing up your outfit but no matter what you wear Papyrus calls you telling you that he lied and gave the wrong description of your appearance to Undyne. Said description will always be accurate by accident.

  3. Unpictured and frankly not so loved real life example: some people call others gay as an insult but very rarely actually mean it. For the sake of this post said person who was insulted is literally gay.

Lore Diegetic music plays a role in the plot

Metaphor: ReFantazio: - It's established early on in the plot that the music the Protagonist hears is from Gallica's magic playing in his mind. It isn't until later on in the story that this moment becomes an important part to the story.

Hi-Fi Rush: - Chai can feel the rhythm of the world around him as everything is synchronized with the beat. When him and his friends are stuck in a bind, he remembers to feel the beat.

Alan Wake 2 - When something happens in the Dark Place, it can alter reality. The musical number "Herald of Darkness" summarizes Alan's past which also reinforces his will to escape.

Characters Gyarus!

Thumbnail
gallery
317 Upvotes

I love Gyarus so much, I want to emulate the style, even of I'm not that fashionable nor good with make up, I'm trying!

"Gyaru is a Japanese fashion subculture for all ages, often associated with gaudy fashion styles, an extreme makeup style and dyed hair. In Japan, it is used to refer to young women who are cheerful, sociable, and adopt trendy fashions, serving as a stereotype of culture as well as fashion. The fashion subculture was considered to be nonconformist and rebelling against Japanese social and aesthetic standards."

Examples:

- Galko-chan from Please Tell Me! Galk-chan

I love her so much, she's such a good person and friend and, even if strangers stereotype her constantly and think of her as a whore, she remains kind and honest with everyone who may need her help.

- Yua and Reina from Gyaru x Gyaru Yuri

I love them so much! They're so cute! They love each other so much and better themselves for the other! They're also super friendly and helpful with everyone around them, gyaru or not! I love them so much!

- Momo Ayase from Dandadan

She's such a good example of what it means to be a Gyaru, giving priority to her self expression and truth, even if she can be judged for those things (such as her celebrity crush for Ken Takakura) and she is not afraid to step up for others, like for Okarun. Her honesty even brings so much

- Ahko from The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You

She's the best girlfriend! (Every girlfriend is amazing, so that's the bar). I love her so much, she's so honest and kind, she finds cuteness in the most unlikely places (she took a cute selfie with a yokai) and I'm so happy that she found comfort in the Rentaro Family, after being bullied for her lack of expressivity (she has that smile no matter if she's happy, sad, angry, terrified...)

- Haru Koyama from JK Haru, Sex Worker in Another World

She is my favorite character in all of fiction, a true comfort character, and she's everything I aspire to be! No matter how sickening and traumatizing her situation gets, she's always ready to get back up with a smile! She constantly fights for herself, her friends and girls altogether, in the misogynistic world she finds herself in, and tries to change things for the better, in the small ways she can! Also, she's proud of her job, no matter how much people look down on her for it, she won't hide her pride as a sex worker!

- Junko Enoshima

What's more self expression than to destroy the world just because you're bored? She's such a bitch, but you can't not love her, she's so fun and stylish and she has the charisma to pull off her evil plans!

miscellaneous (Cool Trope) When Words Carry Gravitas

Bleach

It's a pretty common trope for anime in particular, but those times when a single word in a property carries so much weight, to the point where a character saying this single word can cause shivers to run down your spine.

Bleach - Bankai being the word characters belt out whenever they're throwing out their ultimate forms. Over the course of the series, many characters have these abilities revealed gradually overtime to the point where even in the final fights, there is a shock when characters who have never done it before suddenly drop the word.

Captain Marvel - Shazam being the magic word Billy Batson must say to transform into Captain Marvel. The transformation itself is usually pretty flashy which really adds to the effect.

Game of Thrones - Dracarys being the high Valerian word for 'dragonfire'. As the story goes on and you have Daenerys get a little more brutal, the word gains more and more effect each time she uses it to execute her enemies or even whole armies.

miscellaneous [loved trope] The Line That Goes Hard Out Of Nowhere

Thumbnail
gallery
1.1k Upvotes

When a lighthearted scene/song has an unexpectedly poignant line. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it gives you whiplash.

- “Do you think God stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he’s created? Here on Earth?”

In Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, Steve Buscemi’s mad scientist character drops this philosophical warhead on the audience.

- “Only the dead have known the end of war!”

Galaxy Hamster by Ninja Sex Party is an otherwise goofy song about a rodent superhero, but between verses this war cry is let out.

- “Daddy, do you even love me? Well I wish you’d show it, ‘cause I wouldn’t know it…”

Adventure time is probably the king of this trope. This early episode has Marcelline the Vampire Queen improvising a song about a time her dad ate her fries, but quickly turns into a reflection of her abandonment issues.

In the original Dracula, he was purely parasitic. In Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, he was empathi and in modern interpratations, he is a mix.

Lore [Horrifying Trope] Nightmarish Atmosphere

Thumbnail
gallery
55 Upvotes

A nightmarish atmosphere encompasses a scene that would be IRL or fiction, a nightmare to be under.

The Dream Sequences (Five Nights at Freddy's 4): The nights in FNAF4, instead of other games, works off a series of dream Sequences where you must try to avoid being scared and killed by nightmarish version of the animatronics.

Burgundy (The New Order: Last Days of Europe): The hypothetical fictional SS state of Burgundy is perhaps one of the most sadistic places to live in TNO's timeline. It's a nightmare for all except the high officials ruling this dystopia that they play and control.
