Personality [Actor Trope] Tics/behaviors that actors do in every movie

Thumbnail
gallery
5.0k Upvotes

This doesn't include actors who do similar types of movies/storylines. So no Matt Damon trying to get home or Rachel McAdams' romances with time travelers. Things like:

Tom Cruise is always running. Probably the best example of this trope, running has more or less become Tom Cruise's trademark to the point where it's notable when doesn't run (like in Digger). The Mission: Impossible franchise gives him an outlet for his running desires but he also has a pretty epic run in War of the Worlds. While he doesn't run in the original Top Gun (if I remember correctly) but he gets to run in Top Gun: Maverick. The Mummy reboot also gave him a chance to run from some sandstorms and even the non-action film Vanilla Sky has a pretty iconic running scene.

Brad Pitt is always eating. Probably the second best example of this trope, Brad Pitt eats a lot in his movies. Pretty much every single scene in Ocean's Eleven has him eating something (though he very rarely finishes anything). He also has notable eating scenes in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Inglourious Basterds, Burn After Reading, and Moneyball, which also features him licking his fingers quite a lot so he can turn through different scouting reports.

Tom Hanks is always peeing. Probably not quite as well know as the previous two, Tom Hanks pees in quite a lot of his movies. An iconic scene in Forrest Gump has him admitting that he needs to pee to JFK. He takes one of the manliest pees ever put on screen in A League of Their Own. A plot point in The Green Mile has his prison guard character suffering from a UTI that John Coffey cures. Even Apollo 13 shows the audience how astronauts go to the bathroom while in space.

Character who greatly relied on a unqiue ability to them. Get that ability robbed from them by someone else

Blindspot- the boys: as the name implies blindspot was born without the abilty to see. But had incredible hearing allowing him to functioning even better then able people. That is until he met homelander who decided to dicombobulate him and destroy his ears. Making him unable to see or hear anymore.

Overhaul-my hero academia: overhaul was a supervillain with the special ability to assamble or disassble all matter using his arms. An ability he relied on very heavily. Later in the dtory shigaraki and mr compress trap him and wither away both off his arms. Make him unable to use his ability ever again. Which breaks him mentaly

All victims of bending removal/blocking- avatar the last airbender/legend of korra.

Both avatar aang and amon had abilities that allowed them to take away or block benders ability to control the elements. Making them regular people like everyone else.

Kung Fu Panda 2- As Po has found his inner peace, he deflects a fireball from Shen’s cannons which causes his hand to catch fire. Instead of just dipping his hand into the body of water surrounding him, Po puts it out by shoving it in his mouth.

The Amazing World of Gumball- In the episode “The Safety”, The Wattersons are all chained up by Darwin who became a dictator. Everyone pointed to Gumball a key right next to a cactus pot just behind him. However, Gumball grabbed the cactus instead and chewed it to form a key to unlock the chains.

Characters Character disappears, never to come back-- Oh wait, they came back

Thumbnail

Sometimes a character disappears/is written out and they're never seen again. Then there are characters who disappeared for a time and it seemed we'd never see them again, only for them to actually come back and feature (at least somewhat) prominently in the show again.

The Sopranos - Sal "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero

A few episodes before the end of season 1, Tony's friend Pussy is arrested in a raid on a mob social club. After he gets out on bail, Tony starts suspecting that Puss turned informant. Eventually his suspicion fades (as it turned out another mobster arrested in the raid was a rat), but Pussy unexpectedly disappears right after. It seems like he's just gone, and even the show's creator David Chase planned to never bring him back at first. Then in the first episode of season 2, Pussy reappears at Tony's house, explaining he was just in Puerto Rico for a time to treat his bad back. The truth is that he actually was an informant, and he just disappeared until the FBI decided it was safe for him to return. Tony later finds this out and has to kill him.

Game of Thrones - Gendry

Gendry is the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon. Across the first 3 seasons he is found as a blacksmith in King's Landing, sold to the Night's Watch, captured by the Lannisters, escapes with Arya, joins the Brotherhood Without Banners, is sold again, and is brought to Stannis Baratheon. He's meant to be a sacrifice to increase Stannis's power, but Davos Seaworth helps him escape, recognizing that he's an innocent nephew who wasn't interested in the throne. He leaves in a rowboat, and seems to keep rowing for a long time cuz he's gone for 4 seasons. Several fans even thought that he was forgotten about and wouldn't be brought back at all. Then in season 7 Davos finds him again for a dangerous mission beyond the Wall, and through the remainder of the show he gets legitimized as a Baratheon and has a brief romance with Arya.

Characters Characters who walk into a room with zero leverage, outgunned and outnumbered, and still leave in complete control.

• Upvotes

1.Tommy Shelby (Peaky Blinders) – Walks into Alfie Solomons' distillery completely surrounded by armed men, bluffs about a grenade wired to blow the whole building, and walks out with the deal he wanted.

2.Tywin Lannister (Game of Thrones) – Never needed a sword in his hand to make the most dangerous people in Westeros feel like scolded children in their own rooms.

3.Gus Fring (Breaking Bad) – Pure ice water in his veins. Commands the room by speaking softer than everyone else.

Not talking about plot armor or superpower fights—just pure psychological dominance where one person flips the entire power dynamic in two minutes of dialogue. Who else belongs here?

Characters Adapting characters to be more grounded—when they previously had a vaguely mystical quality—makes them more interesting and cool

Thumbnail
gallery
132 Upvotes

Living armors (Dungeon Meshi)

Dungeon Meshi has numerous examples of this; typically, living suits of armor are described as the spirits of ancient knights possessing the armor, but in this universe, they are actually colonies of mollusks that control the interior of the armor, allowing it to move as a single individual

Mimic (Dungeon Meshi)

Mimics are typically portrayed simply as creatures that, for some reason, resemble treasure chests and attack with their mouths when opened; however, in *Dungeon Meshi*, they are actually a type of hermit crab that uses a chest as a shell, hiding inside and lying in wait for prey that opens the chest

Aknosom - Karakasa (Monster Hunter Rise)

It’s more of an inspiration, but since the game features a theme rooted in Japanese folklore, I thought it would be creative to include a monster based on the Karakasa—an umbrella that comes to life—reimagined as a bird that stands on one leg, with wings that fold in a way that resembles an umbrella

Nakarkos - Two-Headed Dragons in general (Monster Hunter Generations)

Instead of including a two-headed dragon—which would have been a more logical choice, given that the *Monster Hunter* universe is heavily rooted in real-world biology—they opted for a creature resembling an octopus. It controls two tentacles, each tipped with a skull, creating the appearance of a two-headed dragon (with these "heads" capable of spewing various elements, such as explosive, fire, and so on)

Aging (Uma Musume Cinderella Gray)

The possibility of an Umamusume "surpassing her prime" and inevitably becoming weaker over time is treated—both in the game and the original anime—as a vaguely mystical aspect of their biology, with no further explanation as to how it works. *Cinderella Gray* offers a more realistic and far darker explanation: the immense physical strain these girls subject their bodies to during every race eventually wears down their hearts, to the point where, at a certain stage, they can no longer pump enough blood to sustain such extreme levels of performance. This is what happens to Oguri toward the end of the series; yet, in her final race, she miraculously manages to recover her former pulse—entering a state described as a "triumphant pulse"—which makes her last race truly special and miraculous.

Hated Tropes [hated trope] they fell in love too quickly…

Romeo and Juliet, all version: they’re entire tragic love story talks place under 5 days at most, and they basically just fall in love after a quick meeting (granted I understand it’s very old story, so I’ll cut it some slack)

How to lose a guy in 10 days: it’s in the title: they manipulate each other and lie in order to get each other way from one another, despite that they end up falling in love despite their efforts.

Titanic: Jack and rose knew each other for 3-4 days and yet Jack is utterly smitten with her and she is into it, despite the fact that most people would be creeped out if someone was that into you in such a short time.

Snow White and the 7 dwarfs: the original animated relationship speed runner, they have exactly ONE conversation together and yet he’s presented as her true love.

miscellaneous Civil wars are really bad for everyone involved.

  1. Horus Heresy (WH40k): when warmaster Horus is corrupted by Chaos he leads half of the Astartes legions in rebellion. Though the war lasts only a few years, countless lose their lives, imperial forces are decimated and the emperor is no longer capable of direct governance of his domains, beginning a long decline for 10,000 years.
  2. Dance of the Dragons (ASOIAF): a succession dispute between Rhaenyra and Aegon kills much of the royal family and more important their dragon mounts, their potent weapons that discourage rebellion. Neither sit the throne for long before Rhaenyra’s son ascends to rule a weakened kingdom.
  3. Imperial Civil War (Star Wars Legends): in the aftermath of Palpatine’s death various imperial warlords carve out fiefdoms and rump states heedless of who rules Coruscant, making war on both New Republic and other Imperial leaders.
  4. Second American Civil War (The Fire Rises): political instability in the aftermath of a more lethal COVID pandemic begins a civil war in the US between various political factions.
  5. Calradian Civil War (Bannerlord) a three sided civil war between claimants has split the calradian empire into weaker pieces.
  6. Inca Civil War (IRL): in virtually every Civil War, a country is greatly weakened temporarily regardless of the outcome. However the Inca Civil War had both poor timing and vastly weakened the state before a grave crisis. When the emperor Huayna Capac and his royal heir died of likely smallpox in quick succession the younger princes Huascar and Atahualpa engaged in a bloody civil war for the throne. Many supporters of both sides were brutally slaughtered resulting in a vastly smaller royal family and seasoned officials to govern the empire. Atahualpa won but soon after the Spanish arrived and ultimately caused the collapse of the once mighty Inca that was already diminished by civil war.

Lore That one point in the character’s story fans are ashamed of/never bring up

Thumbnail

Marvel: Hank Pym hitting Janet Van Dyne in this infamous panel absolutely shattered his reputation and made him out as a domestic abuser (somehow also overshadows his creation of Ultron as a mistake). What’s worse is apparently the artist was trying to convey Hank pushing Janet but it looks like he slaps her. So he got this label by mistake.

Ultimate Spider-Man: That one plot Spider-man and Wolverine switch bodies. Wolverine’s part is especially egregious considering he flirts with actual high schoolers.

Jun-Ho (Squid Game): Holy shit this one. I bashed season 3’s ending the other day in another post, and I brought him up as a major reason it was underwhelming at best and an actual trainwreck at worst, and I love how nobody actually like tried to defend or justify his failure afterthought of an existence. To repeat, I mentioned:

  1. Lied to Gi-Hun about knowing the front man or showing him a picture of his face, after all, even if he wants to help In-Ho waiting until they’re on the island is bad timing.

  2. Brought on some fishing captains he somehow NEVER tried investigating despite the recent revelations with his brother. What’s even more insulting is how easily Woo-Seok found out Park was a rat very quickly.

  3. Extremely unlikable. Like, never apologized to Mercenary Kim on how this guy he vouched for ended up killing most of them, and never apologized to Woo-Seok for his getting arrested saving his ass. He also never seems to regret how he hid any secrets from Gi-Hun that with the revelations front man pretended to be a player, did so much damage.

  4. Is completely irrelevant to the ideological battle between the MC and the big bad. It’s hilarious how many massive bits of knowledge Gi-Hun and Jun-Ho to the end do not know about each other. In fact Jun-Ho is 7 minutes late to the last game concluding meaning he was all in all, pretty fucking useless to the plot. Also the baby survives either way because In-Ho is there to take her off the island.

And yes the Minecraft parody version is still a flat out improvement over the real Jun-Ho. How pathetic is that? When the comedy abridged version is better? It’s not like “Creeper” or “Fallen Kingdom” which the original songs are really good in their own right, it’s literally the PREFERABLE version.

And for a more humorous note

Pink kryptonite (DC): Turns Kryptonians exposed to it gay.

Powers [funny trope] yeah vampires can do that

Thumbnail

When a story gives vampires some random powers that is attributed to them being vampires

-Dio (JoJo's bizarre adventure)

In JoJo's vampires have a secondary ability of keen bodily manipulation that lets them use things like Lazer eyes by pressurizing their eye fluid or freezing people by getting rid of all the vapor in his arm and taking in other people's to then get rid of that, I know it doesn't make much sense.

-Dracula (hotel Transylvania)

In hotel Transylvania Dracula has the power to freeze people and things in time, whether that be using it on a singular person or an entire area. He seemingly can't use this on other fully matured vampires though.

Originally I was going to include my babysitters a vampire for the fact they could fly without transforming but turns out that has been in a few other novels

Personality Surprisingly Knowledgeable on an Unexpected Suspect

Family Guy - Peter Griffin knowing the of Farewell to Arms

SAO: Abridged - Kirito is surprisingly knowledgeable about English media and literature. At one point referencing Flowers for Algernon, a book from 1958. This actually becomes plot point later as him being the only one to understand Kayaba's references is what leads to the reveal that him and Heathcliff are the same person.

Worm - Kid Win knowing a lot about Victorian dolls and being the only one to know what the name Parian was referencing.

Hunter: The Parenting - After mentioning the Merkava, Boy has to clarify that he wasn't talking about the tank, he was talking about the chariot of god, whose name was apparently revealed to him in a dream.

Deadlock - Seven is the spirit of a death row inmate possessing an electric chair and lives in the sewers under New York. He's also extremely opinionated about fashion.

Fantasy High - Despite taking place in a fantasy setting, Fig somehow knows enough about earth pop culture to reference Greenday and Farrah Fawcett by name

Blue Lanterns (DC)

In fearful day, in raging night,
With strong hearts full, our souls ignite,
When all seems lost in the War of Light,
Look to the stars

American dad - Terry: Terry left Greg to follow 311 on tour. Living his husband and daughter behind and he is still going apparently because he hasnt come back. The real reason is because one of the co-creators and the voice of Terry, Mike Barker, left the show due to "creative differences" around the time AD switched to TBS.

Karen - crazy ex girlfriend: Karen is a crazy coworker that was just a comic relief, she leaves the show in season 3 because she got a job as a hands and foot model. The real reason? the actress just got a better role in other projects.

Marcella (Legend Quest: Masters of Myth) Giving Marcella her own team and her not give a complete shit about anyone makes no sense when she literally pulled Leo’s team together during tough times and even worked with Teodora, someone who she wasn’t a huge fan of in S1.

Jumba (Lilo and Stitch 2025) Not only does his new voice suck but turning him into a villain to make up for the lack of Gantu is a dumb decision when you realized that he actually did care for Stitch and had good intentions in the original.

Lore (Annoying trope) "bitters" "walkers" JUST SAY ZOMBIE

Thumbnail
gallery
298 Upvotes

In a lot of zombie media they use don't say zombies they say stuff like "infected" "shamblers" "bitters" just things that sound more stupid than just saying zombies but this also applies to other monsters like Vampires

"Walkers" get a bit of a pass because the point is that zombies don't exist in media sense in that universe (TWD)

A very annoying example is from Back 4 blood with the "ridden" no one would actually say ridden during an apocalypse they'd say zombies (Back 4 blood)

When aliens come to Earth in search of resources or to begin construction or build infrastructure, but end up getting into a fight with the local population... Humanity.

  1. Command and Conquer - The Scrin: The Scrin orignally seeded Earth with Tiberium and went into hibernation so that they could harvest it once it had spread. When they do get the aignal to begin harvesting, they find themselves in the middle of GDI and NOD. The initial Scrin invasion literally consists of their version of farmers and construction laborers instead of actual military units.

  2. Battle: LA - Landsharks: The Landsharks are implied to be a suffering species running on fumes, and invade Earth out of desperation and to harvest its water. Of course, they're met with heavy resistance from human resources, and it's implied that they were driven back after losing their air power.

Thumbnail

The story literally tell to the audience that there's no need to care about the implications of this

Say uncle (steven universe): uncle grandpa says to steven that he don't need to thing about how is any of this happening cause this is not canon. The only canon thing is that they are gonna sink LarsxSadie ship.

The no-sin situation (original sins): A fake Nick Fury explain that everything that the characters confess here would be out of continuity so they can't say whatever they want.

Hellkaiman (dorohedoro): an extra chapter with no sorcerers were Kaiman kill a bunch of characters, the gyoza fairy is evil and Nikaido has black hair. The lesson of the episode is that this wasn't related to the main story at all.

Danganronpa V3: a meta example. the story start with a disclaimer that say that all the events here are fictional, something that wasn't in any other game. This is cause the entire game is not part of the rest of the series.

Characters Something wants to copy another thing, but because they dont understand the thing theire copying it comes out fucked up and deformed

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Still Life (Backrooms) - All of the backrooms are like this, but the Still Life are the most. Basically, if I understand it correctly, everything in the backrooms is created from the collective memories of that thing. So if it would try to create a copy of, say, me, it would use memories of the people who know me to create the clone. The problem with memories is that they can get warped. The more you remember, the less you do, as they say. And the results are these messed-up-looking "people" with deformed features.

Agamemnon counterpart - An old creepy video from YouTube. It starts with text that says that, in the future, on a destroyed blue planet, someone found a cassette tape. It then proceeds to tell us that the video is completely different from what is on the cassette tape before showing us a messed-up and corrupted-looking cartoon. Now, it could all be random, made to confuse you; however, a popular theory is that the video is actually trying to tell a story. That in the future, when Earth is destroyed and humanity is seemingly extinct, an alien race finds a tape with an old children's cartoon and tries to recreate it. Key word being tried.

Empty Child (Doctor Who) - In World War II London, an alien spaceship containing Medical nanogenes crash-lands in London. Now the nanogenes' purpose is to heal anyone it deems injured. The problem with that is that, for it to do its job, it must know what the species it's trying to heal looks like and its biology. And it hasn't the faintest idea what humanity looks like. So when it crashed in London, it crashed right next to the corpse of a little boy who died during the Blitz. The boy was wearing a gas mask, and since the genes had no prior knowledge of humanity, it assumed every human looked like this, and those who didn't, it deemed "injured," so it started turning normal people into gas mask zombies, with the gas mask being a part of their face.

Old AI (Real life) - Now AI has become so advanced it can be really hard to distinguish it from real life, even with its flaws. But when it first came out, it... wasn't like that. It just mindlessly copied the pictures in the catalogue without knowing why or what it was trying to copy.
