Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.
Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

They're oblong, brown and striated, and have two sharp "teeth" that hold them in place on fur/cloth.

Hello! It has been over a decade since I have dipped my toes into the world of horticulture, so I'm not entirely sure where to start with this.
Illinois side of Mississippi, near St. Louis. Starts growing early-mid spring, can go from nothing to 9 feet in 2.5-3 months. Regrows from being cut off at the base, but with more branches. Every one of them has a dark spot in the middle of the stem.
Edit: Solved already! Tree of Heaven. I am not looking forward to this.
Edit 2: Unsolved. Black Walnut or Tree of Heaven? Duke it out in the comments!
Edit 3: Consensus is Black Walnut. Thank you for the help everyone!

This plant was in y prop box. So I grew it from something I have. Tho it looks nothing like anything I have so Iβm at a loss. The color difference in the leaves is throwing me too. Any thoughts? Iβm in Maryland

The label said itβs East Indian lemongrass and google lens confirmed but I want to be as sure as I can be before I use it for tea or soup. I posted yesterday and had a few comments telling me this was not the kind that you can eat and Iβll get sick. It has a strong lemony aroma and I was fairly sure that I have purchased fronds just like this from the supermarket before but those comments have me paranoid.

I bought it in a store, and it got sick so I had to cut off the main stem (it was beyond saving). I kept it because I saw it was recovering from it roots and grew again. And to my surprise, the leaves of this one are completely different from the ones the original had. And now I genuinely have no idea to what plant these leaves belong toβ¦β¦.please help π

For a school project we had to pick a plant that we donβt know and sit with it and observe it then Id. We canβt use photo identification. I chose this plant and canβt find it on any websites!! It is fall and most likely lost its flowers or leaves, itβs growing on a rocky hillside in Victoria bc.

It came in a plant I bought as spearmint. The pot is mostly spearmint but there's this other species as well, it looks like lemon balm. The leaves have an obvious lemon peel smell when rubbed and I'd love to make myself a cup of tea but I don't want to get poisoned hahaha. Thank you!!

This tree was here before I moved into my San Ramon (northern Californian) house. The tree is medium sized, semi deciduous to fully deciduous, drought tolerant, slow to medium growing pace, has woody thorns at the ends of branches and lacks flowers, fall colors and all fruit. No ai has been able to tell me what it is, they keep saying Russian olive or pomegranate but itβs definitely not that. The leaves are pretty dark green and have no fuzz.

I think I have a mislabeled seed packet. I think this was supposed to be a Lemon Squash from Baker Creek. I also have zucchini and crook neck yellow growing in the same garden. Cross pollination possible? Google images says Zephyr, but these are so round, and there is green at the top, and bottom of the squash. Zephyr doesnt seem to fit.

Vine will be in comments, found next to a bridge that crosses a creek in northwest Alabama underneath a large black walnut tree where I was picking walnuts. Any idea what this could be? The flesh of the fruits is also white and the single seed inside. Google nor a couple of fairly reliable ID apps I use could give me a correct answer.
