I’m 28F, and I’m trying to understand why my self-esteem has collapsed and why I crave romantic love and the feeling of being chosen so intensely, even though I used to be independent, ambitious, confident, and focused on my own life.
**My childhood and early experiences**
I grew up in a traditional Indian middle-class family. My father was in the Army and emotionally unavailable throughout much of my childhood. I never really experienced the kind of emotional affection I wanted from him.
I was raised to be a good, obedient, understanding daughter. I was always academically focused and tried to do everything right.
During school, I experienced rejection from boys I had crushes on. One particularly painful experience lasted several years, and my classmates mocked me for liking someone who didn’t reciprocate my feelings. It affected my confidence and studies.
**My first relationship (age 15–20)**
When I was around 15, a neighbor who was approximately nine years older than me started showing romantic interest. I had admired him for years. He was educated, charming, helpful, and came from a family we trusted.
For the first time, I felt genuinely chosen and special.
Initially, I was hesitant about dating him, but he insisted that I either enter a relationship or lose the connection entirely. Eventually, I agreed.
We were together for approximately four years. The initial years felt intensely romantic, and I believed I had experienced true love.
However, the relationship gradually became controlling. He criticized my clothing, questioned my character, became possessive, and repeatedly gave me the silent treatment until I begged him to communicate.
He eventually became emotionally distant. I noticed him appreciating other women, and I began feeling insecure and unwanted.
He pressured me about marriage, repeatedly disappeared, and once ghosted me for approximately a month and a half. Later, there was an even longer period of no contact.
Eventually, I emotionally detached and ended the relationship. When he returned asking for another chance, I refused.
For years afterward, I remembered mostly the beautiful parts and rarely told anyone about the unhealthy experiences.
Much later, when I discussed the age difference online, people pointed out the possibility of grooming and the inappropriate power imbalance. That realization shattered my understanding of what I had once considered my greatest experience of love.
**My subsequent experiences with men**
After that relationship, I noticed a strange pattern.
I would become intensely attracted or emotionally attached to men, put them on a pedestal, imagine a future with them, and desperately want them to choose me.
But sometimes, when they actually showed interest, I became frightened of entering a relationship.
Around 2018–2021, I became very close to a longtime male friend. I trusted him, especially because he supported me during my mother’s surgery.
Our conversations gradually became intimate, and I thought he might want a relationship. When I asked him directly, he said he had a soft corner for me but didn’t romantically like me.
He then ghosted me. Later, I discovered he had a girlfriend during that period.
I could accept rejection, but the dishonesty and sudden abandonment hurt deeply.
**Another emotionally unavailable attachment**
I subsequently became close to a former classmate whom I admired for his intelligence, ambition, and values.
We had similar academic goals, and I felt understood by him.
He had been hurt in a previous relationship, and I developed a strong desire to support and care for him. Somewhere inside, I believed that if I was understanding, loyal, and caring enough, he would eventually choose me.
When I asked whether he liked me, he said he was confused and still emotionally loyal to his ex.
Nevertheless, I remained attached.
Over time, communication became almost entirely one-sided. He rarely initiated contact or showed meaningful effort.
I developed what I believe was limerence that lasted approximately three years. My self-esteem deteriorated considerably, and I struggled to detach despite knowing the connection wasn’t reciprocal.
Eventually, after another disrespectful interaction in 2024, I finally stopped pursuing him.
**Complicated boundaries with my old male friend**
During this period, my longtime male friend returned and apologized for his previous behavior.
I forgave him, and we resumed our friendship.
Eventually, some conversations crossed sexual boundaries. I participated in exchanges that I later regretted, including sending some modest pictures.
I subsequently discovered that his relationship with his girlfriend was much more serious than he had implied.
I felt immense guilt about my participation and immediately ended those interactions. We stopped communicating in 2024.
This experience left me questioning my judgment, boundaries, and self-respect.
**The emotional collapse in 2024–2025**
After finally detaching from the classmate I had been fixated on, I briefly started imagining that perhaps someday, after becoming professionally successful, I could have a conversation with my first boyfriend.
Shortly afterward, I received his wedding invitation.
Although I hadn’t wanted to resume the relationship for years, the news unexpectedly devastated me.
I also began confronting the unhealthy aspects of that relationship for the first time.
Then I experienced two more unsettling interactions.
One man I met through an astrology platform became threatening when I refused to give him my phone number. He threatened to stalk me and come to my home. I blocked him, but the experience frightened me.
Later, I became interested in another man whom I perceived as independent, progressive, and emotionally mature. I tried to stop myself from becoming attached because I was terrified of repeating my previous patterns.
Eventually, I discovered he was married despite presenting himself as unmarried.
That was another major blow to my ability to trust people.
After these experiences, I felt emotionally overwhelmed and found myself mentally returning to my first relationship and the feelings I associated with it.
Since then, my self-esteem has been extremely low.
