Personal Skills IWTL how to actually retain what I read instead of finishing a book and remembering nothing

i'll get through like 50 pages feeling engaged and then someone asks me what happened and my brain is just static. is this a focus thing, a reading speed thing, or am i just built different in the worst way possible? looking for actual strategies that don't involve rereading everything three times.

Social Skills IWTL to dance like an average for a xmas party

Xmas parting coming up, IWTL to dance!

I have a work Christmas party coming up at the beginning of December. I am going with my partner, it is the firdt time we have been to something like this together, and I'd love to get up and dance with her.

I have never danced; I am worried about it, but if I were to have a few skills under my belt I might feel better about getting up and dancing if front of loads of other people.

What is the fastest way I can get decent / socially adept at this sort of thing?

Neither of us drink alcohol, so drinking for courage isn't an option. It will be a disco btw, with all the obvious tunes - I'm not trying to learn how to break dance.

Thank you in advance.

Academics IWTL Reading comprehension with bad vocab?

Hi! I really want to improve my reading comprehension skills, but my vocab knowledge is absolutely dog water.

English isn’t my first language, and I have a hard time understanding scientific paragraphs when words I don’t know are all over the place.

I try using context clues, but my brain is often overloaded!

Any tips? :(

Academics IWTL how to stop writing useful notes and then never seeing them again

self teaching electronics for about 2 years. maybe 40 pages of notes, all tidy, all basically dead.

needed something about op amp offset last week and googled it from scratch. then found MY OWN NOTE on it twenty minutes later. felt personally attacked by a document.

im not looking for a huge second brain project. a note taking app for personal knowledge management that nudges old stuff back at me would be nice, or a paper habit that does the same. what survives for normal people who have jobs and evenings??

Academics iwtl English grammar

I dropped out of school at 13, and didn't really pay attention in my classes anyway. So I have no idea the difference between nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Or where to place the comma, or when to use an apostrophe. All that stuff.

I want to know, mostly just cause I don't want to be ignorant when it comes to the language I speak😭

Could you give me resources that'll help? YouTube channels or websites?

The part I'm struggling with is finding intermediate lessons. I'm not a complete beginner, but that's what most of the channels I find focus on

*that can be fixed with a screwdriver, a small brush, and a can of compressed air. This includes bits that have more points than a Phillips Head but things that require a flathead screwdriver as a pry bar are borderline.

Personal Skills iwtl How to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle

25F and noticed that my weight is steadily increasing. I have a gym membership but i’m reluctant to go if i don’t have a class booked which is often difficult to book due to my schedule. i envy those who just go to the gym and do their thing because every time im there alone its very overwhelming. there are countless youtube videos etc etc but they all are different and confusing. i was thinking of cycling to work to help with the movement. also i know my diet can be improved. i was thinking about overnight oats for breakfast and chia pudding for lunch (and anything for dinner) to try and stay consistent. does anyone know how i can learn how to manage my body and health properly or have a solid routine i can just do 3-4x a week? any advice is appreciated 🥹

Academics iwtl how to learn and to become “educated”

I’ve never really learned how to learn, if that makes any sense. I’ve also never learned how to study and retain what I’ve learned. I’ve always been extremely curious, but I’m not sure I can say I had a true ‘thirst for knowledge’.

I’m a math major, but there’s still so many things I want to learn about. So far, the topics I’ve wanted to learn more about are: philosophy, history, psychology, and of course mathematics/physics.

I kind of just don’t know where to start. Is there any readings that you might recommend? also, any advice on how I can retain the information I learn? I’ve never had to study before, but I feel it’s important I learn how to as soon as possible.

Personal Skills IWTL how to make learning new things feel like exploring instead of studying

I used to love randomly discovering something interesting and then spending hours looking into it. I'd start with one question, end up with ten more, and somehow learn a bunch of stuff without even realizing it.

Lately I feel like I've lost that.

Whenever something catches my attention, I usually just look it up, watch a quick video, or ask AI for an explanation. I get the answer, but I rarely feel curious enough to keep going. It's almost like having information so easily available has taken away some of the fun of figuring things out.

I want to get back into learning things just because they're interesting. Not necessarily useful skills or things for school/work, but random topics like science, history, mysteries, psychology, or literally anything that catches my attention.

I've been wondering if the problem is how I'm learning. Most resources either hand you the answer immediately or turn learning into structured lessons with quizzes and progress tracking.

What I'm looking for is something more like exploration. Starting with an interesting question, trying to figure it out myself, discovering clues or unexpected connections, and following whatever interests me next.

Almost like going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole, but with a little more interaction and discovery instead of just reading.

But I also wonder if adding structure to curiosity would just make it feel like homework again.

Has anyone found a method, website, or app that actually makes learning random things feel fun?

And for people who still genuinely enjoy learning in their free time, what makes you want to keep exploring a topic instead of just getting the answer and moving on?

Social Skills iwtl how to do coding

I am really interested in coding and computer science, but I don't know where to start. Lots of people say to start with python, a language, but without AI telling me what to write on the website, I am completely lost. I am pretty good with coding blocks like scratch and coding.org, but I want to really get into coding and make my own stuff.

Personal Skills IWTL how to develop a deeper, stronger speaking voice as an adult

I'm nearly forty and recently had to listen back to a series of voice memos. Jesus Christ. I knew I didn't have a particularly impressive voice, but I thought it sounded reasonably okay. Apparently, the microphone disagreed.

I'd like to learn how to develop a deeper, stronger, more resonant speaking voice. Not for singing or impressions. Just everyday conversation.

Where should a complete beginner start?

  • Are vocal coaching and speech therapy worthwhile?
  • What exercises help with resonance, pitch, articulation, and projection?
  • Are there particular training methods for developing a more masculine voice?
  • How much improvement is realistically possible for an adult?

I'm willing to practise consistently. I'd just like to know which techniques are effective and which are a waste of time.

Has anyone successfully learned to improve their natural speaking voice?

Sports iwtl I want to learn how to maintain my home gym equipment properly. Where should I start?

I'd like to get better at maintaining home gym equipment instead of waiting until something starts squeaking, loosening, or wearing out.

I'm thinking about learning the basics of inspecting bolts, checking cables and pulleys, identifying worn components, and understanding which maintenance tasks should be left to a qualified technician.

If you've learned to maintain your own equipment, what resources or skills helped you most? Which tasks are reasonable for a beginner, and which ones should never be improvised?

Academics IWTL how to get a 5 in AP Bio

I’m currently taking AP Bio in my freshman year and I admit it’s a little challenging but my grade isn’t all bad and I’m been improving. My sister took this class to last year in her freshman year, but even tho she got better grades than me right now she only got a 4. I’m not saying a four is bad for clarification, but I was really surprised as she is really good at AP Bio and picks up things quickly. But I would also like to note she didn’t study ahead of time and was watching videos on 2 times speed the week or so (probably less) before the test. Another thing is she catches on to things quickly but can’t recall the information later, but I am the opposite. My AP Human Geo test is also the same day, so I want to have a plan to be able to ace the bio one when the time comes.

I know a 4 is an amazing grade but i can’t help but want a 5 and I’m willing to put in the work so any tips?

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to repair basic things around the house

I want to learn how to fix simple things around the house instead of always depending on someone else to do them. There are small problems that come up from time to time like a loose cabinet handle, a squeaky door or a wobbly piece of furniture and I would like to understand how to deal with them properly.

I have very little experience with tools, so I would need to start with the basics. I want to learn which tools are useful for beginners, how to use them safely and how to recognize which repairs are simple enough to do myself.

For those who learned basic home repairs on their own how did you get started? Did you begin with small projects learn from someone experienced or practice with old furniture and spare materials? What would you recommend as a first project for a complete beginner?

My goal is to build practical skills gradually and become more confident doing simple repairs around the house. Any advice on where to begin and what to learn first would be appreciated.
