I was talking Christmas plans with my coworkers and mentioned that my uncle Serg, who immigrated from Russia in the 90s, makes a huge deal out of Christmas and came up with a bunch of traditions. Before I even finished my sentence, the new guys cuts in with "Actually, its pronounced Sergei, and Russians don't celebrate western Christmas, because it's not a festival for the -oh, what's the word in english, OH- Orthodox religion. I lived in Russia for a while in my 20s, it was a really weird culture shock." We all just nodded awkwardly and carried on, but dude. I will call MY uncle the name he asked me to use, and he may not have grown up celebrating western christmas, but he has for the last 30-some years. Quit acting like you know my family better than I do just because you lived in his home country for a hot second. And don’t act like you forgot the word "orthodox", weirdo.
Edit: Serg's full name is Sergei, so my coworker didn’t correct my pronunciation so much as assume I was mispronouncing it. So using the word "pronounce" in the title was a little misleading. Serg has only gone by Serg for my entire life, I've never heard anybody-family, friends, acquaintances-call him anything else.
