Seeking Advice Only 20-year-old father homeless with my son in DFW ā eviction on my record. Where do I start?
Iām 20 years old and currently jumping from hotel to hotel with my son. Iām trying to get us into stable housing, but I have an eviction from last year and still owe money to my previous landlord. My credit is also in the 500s, so Iām worried about getting denied everywhere I apply.
Iām trying to figure out the fastest realistic way to get us into a place of our own. I donāt have the luxury of spending months applying to apartments that are just going to reject me, and hotel costs are making it harder to save money.
Iām located in the DallasāFort Worth area of Texas. Iām willing to consider private landlords, smaller apartment communities, income-based housing, shared housing if itās safe and appropriate for my son, or any legitimate program that could help us get stable.
Iām also trying to find steady employment that pays enough to support us while working around my sonās childcare schedule.
Iām not looking for a handout or expecting someone to solve everything for me. I want to work, provide for my son, and get us back on our feet. I just need to figure out the best place to start.
For anyone who has experienced homelessness with a child or had to find housing after an eviction:
What did you do first?
Did any organizations actually help you find housing quickly?
Were you able to rent from a private landlord with an eviction on your record?
Are there programs in DFW that help parents with children who are staying in hotels?
What would you do in my position over the next 7ā30 days?
I would really appreciate any practical advice, resources, or experiences you can share.
