Hopefully these photos do talk for themselves.

This is a MacBook Air (not mine) that has seen ‘liquid’ at some time in its life. It’s stone dead.

Struggling to decide: keep M4 or M4 Pro

Hello, I'm super new to MacBooks. Been a Windows user my whole life but while researching for a MacBook for a friend I got curious and decided to sell my 2025 Lenovo Yoga 7 Laptop (32GB RAM/1TB SSD) and looked for used MacBook Pros that I could afford from the money I made selling my laptop (1,300$).

This left me with a MacBook Pro M4, 16/512GB with Nanotexture screen for 1.3k in perfect condition which I've been using for 3 days. Randomly looking online I saw an 24GB M4 Pro (also 512GB) model close to me for 1.6k in my area. Texted him I'd pick it up for 1.4k the same day and to my surprise he agreed. This one is in even better condition than the other one, really looks like fresh from the store (no its not stolen or anything, he just seemed like a rich-ish dude who actually wasn't using it and didn't care too much about the money).

Now I have two MacBook Pros with me and I need to sell one. Apparently I could get close to 1.4k for the nanotexture one on refurbed sites while the M4 Pro would even bring 1.7k

I kinda want to fUtUrE pRoOF my setup but I'm not sure if the extra power of the M4 Pro is needed

For context: currently mostly university stuff (Masters), highest workload is when writing scientific papers when I have like 80 browser tabs open, 10 docs in word, 3-5 Excel sheets and 20+ docs in Acobat. Also lots of Canva use and rarely some Instagram reel editing on Capcut but nothing major.

Since most university friends have older MacBook Airs (and apparently the MacBook Neo is also supposed to be great for university) I kinda think that the M4 normal should be enough. Hence I'm really struggling to decide. I really like the Nanotexture screen and would like the profit (keep M4, sell M4 Pro) but I also wanna be sure to have a reliable device for the next 4-6 years.

But since I'm new to MacBooks and the YouTube reviews are kinda ambiguous I'd be super happy for some advice :)

My Productivity with Macs

What happened to Apple saying they will not merge the MacBook and iPad?

Rumors say they are releasing a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen, but isn’t that just a more powerful iPad?

I also don’t understand who the audience is because if you want a touchscreen MacBook, just get an iPad, and if you want it to have the compatibility of a laptop, just get a cheaper windows laptop that has a touchscreen and it will have more compatibility than a normal MacBook. While I understand there is an audience it seems very small especially at the price of a MacBook Pro.

Apple sent me 2 MacBooks

EDIT: Since all of you think I'm either a bot or trying to be Jesus or something by returning a free laptop, spoiler alert: I don't care if Apple gets it back! The billionaires are FINE without it, I'm sure Apple wouldn't notice if they gave out 1000 free laptops. The only reason I'm asking this is because I was considering selling it after I had forgotten about it for several months. I didn't want to sell a laptop that could potentially be locked or unusable. This is the first time anything like this has happened to me, so I know NOTHING about the legal or technological processes when it comes to an expensive item being accidentally free. Also, like other people have mentioned in their comments, some companies and sellers do end up pushing for "theft" or for their items to be returned if something like this happens. Yes, I had my question answered at the store. But would I really trust the one sentence answer from an employee who looked like she would blow me up if I kept bothering her? She herself told me she wasn't sure. I just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience, but I can tell some of you are reallllll salty that this didn't happen to you. Not everyone knows as much as you, so if your superior knowledge ends up bothering you this badly I'd advise you to touch grass

In January of 2025, I ordered a MacBook. About a week after it shipped, UPS marked the package as lost, so I had to contact Apple. After some "investigating", they determined that the package was indeed lost and sent me a replacement laptop. The replacement came the first week of Feb, no issues. Fast forward to June 2025. The original MacBook, the one that had been lost, randomly shows up on my doorstep. When I went to the tracking, it looked like it had taken a tour around NYC before Amazon picked it up and delivered it. So now I have 2 MacBooks...

In October of 2025, I took it to an Apple Store to see what I should do about it (I should've called Apple, I know). They essentially told me they could take it and just throw it away, or I could hold on to it, so I just took it back home with me. It's been a year and to this day, I still don't know if that means I can use it for myself. Apple would've been able to see that it was delivered, and would've asked for it back, right...? I wasn't even expecting to have the original one show up, in perfect condition.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen before and what they've done about it...

13” M4 Air 16/1000 or 14” base M4 Pro MacBook Pro 24/512

Hi there,

As in the title. I own both and I know that Pro is superior in many ways (screen, speakers, RAM, speed) and I’m trying to force myself to use it, but I keep coming back to the Air - it just feels better… I would kill cross the street on red light for an Air with MiniLED screen…

What’s your opinion? Should I just sell the Pro and be done with this dilemma?

Repaste MBP 2017

• Upvotes

I’m looking to replace the thermal paste on my 2017 MacBook Pro A1708.

Should I get Honeywell PTM7950 or Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM?

I’m in Sweden and Thermal Grizzly is available locally, while Honeywell would need to be imported with possible additional fees.

Are both compatible with the A1708? Any differences in installation, performance or longevity that I should consider?

MacBook suddenly slow

• Upvotes

My 2021 MacBook Air M1 has suddenly been very slow. It’s started lagging when typing and slow to load webpages. Used storage is 219.93 GB out of 494.38 GB. Is there a way to fix the lagging?

MacBook Air M5 (32GB RAM) vs MacBook Pro M5 (16GB RAM)

Hello everyone,

Setup: I am looking for a laptop that can serve as both my main home computer and a portable work laptop. At home (around 80% of the time), it would be connected via a hub to two external monitors, a keyboard and other peripherals. The remaining 20% of the time, I would use it in the field, for example, working inside a van as part of my research work.

Intended uses:

- Web browsing and general productivity (e.g., Obsidian).

- Excel, including data analysis.

- Work-specific software with relatively modest system requirements (2.0 GHz CPU and 8 GB RAM).

- Statistical analysis software (e.g., JAMOVI).

- R and Phyton

- Some AI-related tasks, but nothing particularly demanding

Option 1: 13-inch MacBook Air M5, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD.

Option 2: 14-inch MacBook Pro M5, 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. This would cost £120 more than Option 1. Upgrading the Pro to 32 GB RAM would cost an additional £400 compared with the Air, although I could consider it as a long-term investment if there were a compelling reason to do so.

My main concern with the Air is thermal throttling under sustained workloads, given its fanless design. I have heard from colleagues that their MacBook Airs can get quite hot when running demanding tasks.

Given my use case, would you prioritise the Air's 32 GB of RAM or the Pro's active cooling and potentially better sustained performance? Is the Pro worth the extra cost, particularly if I stick with 16 GB RAM?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Where to sell old MacBooks

I bought a MacBook Pro M5 (2025) with 512 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM - 14" last December for my work laptop. Last month, my company made us use their hardware (luckily, I was able to get another MacBook Pro). Now I have an 11-month-old, effectively new, MacBook Pro that I would like to sell.

Where are the best places to sell MacBooks, and do you have any advice for a smooth transaction, recouping as much money as realistically possible, etc.

Any help is much appreciated. My MacBook is having some screen glitches/flashes. Tried doing a software update and I’ve restarted it. The problem still persists, but only happens periodically. Thanks in advance!

MacBook Neo Vs Air coming from a Pro

Hi everyone! I need help deciding between getting a MacBook neo vs air. I’m in my senior year of undergrad and plan to continue my studies to graduate school in the near future. I need help because I’ve had my MacBook Pro for about 6 years and my screen just broke. Instead of paying 900 to get it fixed I might as well buy a new one. I have the 13in pro from 2020 and it’s been amazing but I don’t have the leniency in finances to spend 1500 on a new laptop. I guess I’m looking for advice on which would be a better fit. I study psychology so the only types of software I use are things like SPSS and other statistical softwares but nothing too major besides reading lots of pdfs and using docs, word, canvas etc. I currently have an M1 chip with about 300 gb of storage. Thanks for your help!

What is the default “color profile”. I thought it was “color lcd” but don’t see it on MB Air.

M1 MacBook battery health dropped from ~70% to 35% in just a few weeks. Is this normal?

I have an M1 MacBook, and I've noticed some extremely rapid battery deterioration recently.

A few months ago, my battery health was around 70%, but over the past few weeks, the battery life has deteriorated significantly. I checked the battery information today, and these are the stats:

  • Cycle count: 1,254
  • Maximum capacity: 35%

The battery now drains extremely quickly, and my MacBook sometimes shuts down unexpectedly when the battery reaches around 11%.

I understand that 1,254 cycles is quite high and that the battery is well past its expected lifespan. However, what surprises me is how suddenly the deterioration happened. It seemed to be working reasonably well until recently, and then the battery life practically collapsed within a few weeks.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is such a sudden decline normal for an aging lithium-ion battery, or could there be something else going on?

MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro for AutoCAD — which one makes more sense?

Hi!
I’m looking to get a MacBook, but I’m trying to decide whether I should go for a MacBook Air with 32 GB of RAM or just go straight for the Pro.

I travel quite a lot, often by train, so portability and battery life are important to me. At the same time, I’d like to use the MacBook for work (roughly 10–15 hours per week in AutoCAD)

I don’t create 3D models. My work is mainly designing electrical installations for apartment buildings, industrial halls, and houses. I also know that I’ll want to run the Windows version of AutoCAD in a virtual machine rather than using the Mac version.

For work, I’d also like to connect the MacBook to an external monitor.

My main question is whether a MacBook Air with 32 GB RAM can handle this kind of workload reliably over the long term, or whether I should go for a MacBook Pro with active cooling to avoid thermal throttling during longer AutoCAD sessions.

I don’t want to spend extra money unnecessarily, but at the same time I’d rather pay more now than end up having to upgrade in a year or two.

What would you choose in my situation? Air 32 GB or Pro? And if you’ve actually used AutoCAD in a Windows via Parallels or VMware on either machine, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. (I really prefer macOS over Windows haha)

Is it normal for MacBook battery health to drop from 100% to 96% in 6 months?

The battery health for first 4 months dropped only by 1%, but within last two months it became 96%.

I am using 80% charging limit. It's always plugged during my work. I work 8 -10 hours per day with it.

To those who always thought a touchscreen MacBook was a bad idea, have you changed your mind?

A certain section of MacBook users always thought laptops and touchscreens don’t go together, just because Apple didn't do it.

Now that Apple is doing it, do you suddenly think it's a good idea, or are you sticking to your guns?

MacBook Air m5 16gb vs 24gb

I’m making the foray into MacBooks after being with windows for 25 years.

My current HP is 10 years old and on its death bed.

I’m wanting to future proof myself for another 7+ years.

What I would be doing is the usual browsing, YouTube and some office tasks and maybe light coding and running some local agents.

I do want to get better at coding and learn AI better.

Would you recommend the 24gb ram for this? It’s about $300-400 difference here in Australia.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

MacBook Air M5 vs Pro — Enough for DevOps & Development?

Planning to buy my first MacBook for portability, battery life, and travel.

I already have an ASUS ROG Strix G15 (Ryzen 7, RTX 3050, 16GB), which I'll continue using for heavier workloads.

My workflow (Platform Engineer at a startup):

- Dev: VS Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub, Next.js, Python/FastAPI.

- Cloud: AWS, Cloudflare, deployments, occasional Docker.

- Other: SEO, website management, research, 20–40+ browser tabs.

- Mostly AI-assisted coding; heavy AI processing happens in the cloud.

Considering: Air M5 (16GB/512GB or 24GB/512GB) vs Pro M5/M5 Pro.

Questions:

- Will the fanless Air handle this smoothly without throttling?

- Is 16GB sufficient for 3–5 years, or should I get 24GB?

- Is the Pro worth the extra cost if I already have my ASUS?

Leaning toward the M5 Air. Would appreciate real-world feedback from developers!
