Harry Potter Survey Results & Final Decision
Alright crafters, the results are in! There’s a TL;DR at the end of this post, but we did want to explain how we got here and the choices we’ve made along the way, too. As a quick recap, the mod team noticed a pattern of off-topic conversations and uncivil conversations whenever someone posted crafts related to Harry Potter, and members of the community raised concerns about allowing such content in the subreddit. It was compared to hate speech, due to JK Rowling’s increasingly vocal bigotry and use of her political, economic, and social platforms to further that agenda, as documented here and here. We knew there would be no perfect solution to this problem, and that anything we did would leave some people feeling hurt and upset. But we felt it was important to address the issue, so we asked the community a little bit ago in this post about what they think we should do, and we discussed it as a team as well.
While some commenters opposed the idea of banning it, those discussions were largely centered around concerns about whether it would lead to more censorship. In our experience, posts about other “problematic” topics and IP do not lead to the same level of off-topic conversations and arguments that Harry Potter posts have. Additionally, Rowling is causing a significant amount of concrete and widespread harm towards entire marginalized communities, and as members and supporters of those communities, we felt that removing her influence from this subreddit should still be on the table. So, we created a poll to get simple, concrete feedback on one question: To ban, or not to ban? We limited voting to accounts that were at least 60 days old, and had at least 50 Reddit karma and 10 community karma, in order to keep it to community members and try to avoid brigading for either side. So, here are the results:

As we can see, it wasn’t a complete landslide in either direction, and those who voted definitely tended towards strong feelings on the topic! After gathering 1,232 total votes, 53% of those who voted in the poll are in favor of banning posts related to Rowling and Harry Potter, while 41% of voters are against banning it. Our intention with this post was to gather feedback on the community’s feelings, because comment sections alone aren’t always representative of a full community, and we wanted to give those who aren’t comfortable commenting or aren’t well-spoken a chance to speak their minds. And it seems like the results are pretty clear! While there’s a decent number of people who don’t support Harry Potter posts being banned, the majority certainly does seem to support this ban - as do the members of the mod team.
So, what does this mean for the subreddit? Well, crafts that are directly related to Harry Potter can no longer be posted here. If your craft isn’t obviously Harry Potter, and you don’t reference it at all, you can still post it - for example, a red-and-gold scarf is perfectly welcome, so long as you don’t describe it as a Gryffindor scarf. Wands are fine, even if they’re similar in style, so long as they aren’t explicitly “inspired by Harry Potter.” But a papercrafted Hogwarts, or a replica of a specific character’s wand? Not allowed. We are currently working on updating the wiki in general, and will add a page about this ban in the wiki, including informational resources like the ones posted above and guidelines on what is and isn’t allowed. But generally speaking, any identifiable reference to Harry Potter is going to be a no-go, and moderator discretion will be the ultimate decider on what is and isn’t considered “Harry Potter-related.”
This also doesn’t mean we’re planning to start banning all kinds of IP and inspirations - as stated earlier, we found that Harry Potter posts generated far more issues and conflict than any other IP, and no other IP has been raised as a concern to the same degree. We talked about it, and while we all have companies or creators that we as individuals don’t love to see discussed in the subreddit, no other topic has been so universally controversial and caused so many problems from a purely logistical moderation standpoint. If, in the future, another similar issue does arise, we will handle that as it happens. We may not ask for feedback in the same way, because to tell the truth it stretched the issue out and caused more stress than we meant it to. But for right now, no other topic seems to be causing so many problems both within and outside of the subreddit, so we have no current plans to ban anything else.
Comments on this post are locked, as we don’t want to encourage debate about this topic. We had plenty of that in the original feedback post, and at this point we’ve made our decision. However, if you would like to clarify any aspect of this new rule, or you still have questions about why we chose to do this, please feel free to reach out via modmail! Please also note that we’ve had a couple of mods leave recently, bringing the team down to just four of us. While we are adding new members to the team soon, it’ll likely take us a bit to work out all the kinks with this new rule, as it does with any change to the subreddit! Please be patient with us in the meantime, and remember that the mods are people too, and we are all dealing with our own issues and responsibilities irl.
TL;DR After a community vote, and much discussion from the mods, posts and discussion about Harry Potter and JK Rowling are no longer allowed in the subreddit, and will be removed going forward.

Finished Craft I Made Happy Halloween from Me and Bruce Wayne!
My grandma gave me this cat because he was “last of the litter” and I am beyond thankful for this nut job. She’s always called him Bruce Wayne because she says he looks like he’s wearing a mask like Batman. It’s our first halloween and although I can’t dress him up, I decided to include him in another way this year! He’s my pretty boy and I love him.

Finished Craft I Made Black Cherry and Walnut cutting board
I don't usually love cherry, but I do like it in this "brick wall" style combo with the walnut. The "mortar" is hard maple. Each brick is 3 1/4 in x 1 1/2 in. The mortar is 3/16in wide. The finger grooves are carved to a depth of 11/16 in, 5/8 in wide, and 5 in long.

Work in Progress Urgent advice needed re: covering gouge marks(?)
First I want to apologize if this iconography offends anyone’s religion. It is just a video game costume.
So, I have been crafting a Necromancer costume for my 20 yr old son for Comic Con which is on Halloween this year (inspired by the Diablo 4 game). I used eva foam, and then foam clay to sculpt a rib cage on the chest and painted it. Then my son asked me to carve a upside-down pentagram in the sternum, which I drew on with a pencil but accidentally did that right side up. I erased the pencil lines, and repainted over them, but they’re still visible. Is there any special kind of paint anyone can recommend to cover over the pencil lines of the right side up pentagram?

Finished Craft I Made Made my nanny kid a garbage truck costume for Halloween!!
I used a cardboard box, duct tape, electrical tape, some reflective tape for the brakes and some packing tape!
All the garbage truck costumes (the few there were) were missing the mark so I made him one! The blurs are a customized license plate with his initials and our town’s trash collection company logo.
In total it probably took 6-7 hours to make!

With her auburn curls, tiny freckles, and forest-green dress embroidered with wildflowers, she brings to mind autumn meadows and golden leaves. A mustard knitted cardigan and little crocheted shoes complete her cozy outfit. 🌿
She’s 7” (18 cm) tall, made from cotton jersey and filled with 100% organic sheep wool, with soft mohair bouclé hair.

How-do-I Tuesday Help with "fixing" my bag! 😭
I have this GORGEOUS bag, handmade, but I forgot it too long behind a door and it got mould, which stained the front. 😭
I added a picture of both the front and back so you can better see the difference.😭
Any ideas how I can fix that?
Thanks in advance!

Material Monday I want to make an owl mask, but dont know where to get a blank mask with a beak
Hi! New poster here, and I’m on a time crunch before Halloween, so I apologize if I’m not using proper formatting.
like to make myself an owl masquerade mask sort of like the references above, to match the face of a character in the third pic. I know I’ll need to get feathers and perhaps some thin black semi see through material to make the eyes black. But I’m struggling to fashion a base for it. I‘m not finding any blank masquerade masks that have a small beak below the nose.
Any ideas of how to make a beak attachment to a mask, or other solutions on how to achieve this? TYIA

Finished Craft I Made I crocheted a purse inspired by Gamabunta from Naruto
I tried to capture as many of his recognizable details as possible, along with a little of that stern, dignified look I love so much
But most of all, I wanted to sew him a little silk kimono. I’m so happy I managed to bring that idea to life: I think it suits him incredibly well and adds a special charm. Wearing it, he looks like he’s about to settle down for a well-deserved rest after some important toad business
Now I keep looking at him and wanting to sew myself the same kimono so we can match 🐸

Discussion Iron Rec for sewing and small project
I’ve done a thorough Reddit and Google search to see what the best irons are for smaller projects with fabric and what not. Does anybody have solid recommendation on models or manufacturers for irons that are powerful, have adjustable heat settings, and/or aren’t super bulky and heavy? Having a big ole iron sometimes is more of a pain than anything with my pattern pieces and what not. TIA!!

Discussion I need help painting a belt for my LOTR Halloween costume!
So I'm trying to go as the ring from Lord of the Rings. The biggest piece of my costume is this belt and I bought this stencil to help paint the black speech on, but each paint that I've tried keeps bleeding and smearing behind the stencil. I've tried enamel paint and Krylon spray paint, but both have come out as black blobs on the belt. I'm currently waiting for the stencil to dry so that I can see if sharpie will work, but I don't think it will either. Do you guys have any suggestions? Thankfully the party I'm going to isn't until Saturday, so I have about a week to figure this out.

Discussion What glue to use on puzzle?
Hello!
I have a puzzle i want to make into a mouse pad.
I will glue either a pane of glass or acrylic on top of it to protect it from wear and tear but I don't know what kind of glue i could use that would be invisible.
Or if not how can i attach the puzzle to the glass/acrylic pane?
It is a regular cardboard puzzle.
Thank you!
